The Experience

A handy base for exploring the surrounding area and the neat green garden, to some extent, blocks out the surrounding buildings. It’s a room-only setup so there are no meals but you are within easy walking distance of three good pasticcerie for breakfast.

Bedrooms are all a good size with pristine white or cream walls, crisp white bed linen, floaty curtains and dainty furniture. Four are on the ground floor and three on the first floor, all looking over the garden and all but two are en suite with gleaming bathrooms. You’re left the means to make tea and instant coffee, the fridge has juice and water and there are artisan biscuits for when you’re peckish.

You can ask for your own personal guide for a half or full day, or a motorbike tour. There’s a small communal room on the first floor with a balcony and some books, and next to the pool there’s an annexe with comfy seating.

Reviews

Aptly named, Villa Luce is light, airy and charming with its pristine white walls, fresh pale linens and graceful family heirlooms. An elegant and refined townhouse situated in the quiet, residential area of modern day Santa Maria degli Angeli, it provides an extremely comfortable base from which to explore the region.

Location

The neighbourhood

As well as good bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance there are also bakeries, ice cream parlours and services. You're near to the Porziuncola, a famous medieval chapel standing within the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. From here you can tour Assisi and Umbria's main historic sites. A Michelin-starred restaurant is 30 minutes

Local points of interest from Maria Elena Patacca

  • Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and Porziuncola - We recommend through the ancient rose garden and the oldest parts of the annexed convent. Every year at Christmas, an exhibition of nativity scenes from all over the world is set up.
  • Assisi and Basilica of San Francesco is only 8 minutes by car. The three churches one above the other and the frescoes by Giotto are unmissable. Then, however, it is nice to get lost walking in the medieval city and its alleys where you can find glimpses of heartbreaking beauty.
  • Spello and the Baglioni Chapel is 10 minutes by car. A medieval town with Roman remains. Don’t miss the Baglioni chapel, in the church of San Domenico, painted by Pinturicchio. At the end of June for the Corpus Domini festival, the town is invaded by carpets of flowers.
  • Bosco di San Francesco is 8 minutes by car. A heritage site of the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) evocative for the meeting of water (Tescio stream), nature and art. Also nice for a picnic.
  • Cannara and Bevagna are 20 minutes by car. A bike ride on a flat route passing through the village of Cannara until reaching the beautiful medieval town of Bevagna. At the end of June the town is in the midst of the festival called “Il Mercato delle Gaite”.
  • Perugia is 20 minutes by car. At the foot of the historic centre you can access inside the Rocca Paolina: a unique place that does not exist elsewhere.
