Podere delle Rose stands in softly undulating hills, the main house solid and square, the outbuildings once part of a farm, and ten horses grazing by. Architect Francesca is a darling and lives here with her mother; their fruit, vines and olive oil are organic and the agriturismo is their joy. ‘Limonaia’ is open-plan and homely: a light-filled living area and a small kitchen, a beamed and tiled ceiling, a bookcase packed with books, a bedroom with lace curtains, a small bed on the mezzanine reached by an olive ladder. ‘Chalet’ is just that, built of new pine and rustic inside, with lots of rugs, a tiny kitchen and a wood-burning stove for cosy nights in. ‘Byron’ – once the stables – is a large lofty suite, warm and inviting with a wrought-iron bed, chestnut floors, books, pictures, family pieces and a sofa at the far end. Ride the horses, swoon over the roses (150 varieties), join in the harvest, book a massage. Or relax with a book in the conservatory, an extension of Francesca’s home. Dinners – vegetarian, home-produced, delicious – are served here or outside, illuminated by lanterns and candles.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Francesca Tamburelli

  • This is an extraordinary starting point to explore the charming Medieval villages. We’re in the Commune of Orvieto, about 8km from the centre, 45km from Todi, 35km from Viterbo, 85km from Perugia, 89km from Capalbio and 12km from Bagnoregio.
  • On the border between Umbria and Tuscany, in an amazing location between Lake Trasimeno and Cortona, visit the Reinhardt Garden, a marvel in the Italian botanical scene. It’s only an hour’s drive away, be sure to book a visit.
  • Only 12km away is Bagnoregio, “The Dying City” – reachable only via footbridge, it’s like stepping into the Middle Ages. There are lots of different areas where you can eat or taste local produce.
  • The San Casciano dei Bagni baths are immersed in a green countryside on the southern hills of Mount Cetona and it’s similarly named town, full of art and history, only an hour’s drive away. We’re also only 66km from the Chianciano baths.
  • We’re only 10km from Lake Bolsena: in summer you can swim, walk and visit the marvellous villages surrounding the lake, with their rich histories and traditions.
  • At Podere, sit on a bench, read a book, or simply admire the countryside. Take a walk or go hiking through the numerous surrounding parks, or even go trekking with a guide.
