The Experience

Bedrooms are spread out over three buildings: the Palacio, the Casa do Caseiro and the Cottage. All are tastefully decorated with high ceilings, air conditioning, an honesty bar and a work station. In the Palacio you’ll find a grand piano, chess and cards – it’s a convivial space to spend time in, and also where food is served. Breakfast is a feast of local produce: cheeses, hams, local breads and fruit, eggs and bacon on request. Lunches, snacks and dinners are equally fresh and seasonal.

Bedrooms (doubles can be twins) have smart en suite bathrooms, white towelling robes and doors opening onto terraces with views. Spend your days cooling off in the pool, taking a book to a quiet terrace, or wandering freely through woods, hills, orchards and a small banana plantation on the estate – look out for a Buddhist temple and statues.

There are restaurants in the nearby village, but you can have lunches and suppers here, and the beach is close.

Reviews

The atmosphere and serenity here is lovely and great for a holiday without any pressures. It would be good for groups to get together as well. Very comfortable rooms, lovely host, and nice to be able to sit outside your room on the terrace.

Local points of interest from Carlos & Philip Ribeiro

  • A historic former mining estate. Lugar Minas da Caveira forms part of the historic Mina da Caveira mining village. Guests stay in characterful buildings including the colonial-style Palácio, originally built by the British & the traditional Casa do Caseiro.
  • 145 hectares of private Alentejo countryside. The estate extends across approx. 145 hectares of wooded hills, cork trees, orchards, gardens and walking trails in the Serra de Grândola, offering exceptional privacy, tranquillity and a genuine sense of escape.
  • A Buddhist temple in the heart of the estate. One of the property’s most unusual and memorable features is its Buddhist temple and collection of Buddhist statues. Guests are welcome to visit the temple, which adds to the peaceful and contemplative atmosphere.
  • Seasonal food from the estate. Meals use local and estate-grown produce, including fruit, vegetables and herbs. The cuisine blends Portuguese and Alentejo traditions with subtle colonial influences, served indoors, by the pool or on sunset terraces.
  • Personal hospitality with understated luxury. Family-owned, Lugar Minas da Caveira offers warm, attentive hospitality. Characterful stays, generous outdoor spaces and understated luxury create a personal experience, just 25 minutes from Melides/Comporta beaches.
  • Two dams and outdoor experiences. Guests can swim and canoe in one of the estate’s dams, explore walking and mountain-biking trails, enjoy picnics in nature and experience exceptional stargazing away from light pollution.
