The Experience

Gaze from your bedroom balcony on the Pyrenees as vast birds glide by: eagles, storks, vultures and kites. Perched in a remote hilltop village this three-storey cluster of tumbledown houses is now a small eco hotel.

Bump down a track to be welcomed by Patxi and Ramon, happily “sharing the dream”. Inside: a maze of nooks, crannies and wonky floors, wood-burning stoves and a wall of glass for soaring valley views. You’ll find organic soaps and chocolates in the bedrooms with balconies and terraces.

It’s an easy-going sort of place too. Breakfast on local cheeses, hams and fresh pastries in the dining room. You can stroll up to the village, check out the vulture observatory, drop down to the valley, cross the Roman bridge, and set off on a hike around the mountain.

We stayed in a beautiful corner suite on the 3rd floor overlooking the valley and river below. The breakfasts were delicious and the dinners and local wine even more so. The design and cleanliness of the fully restored historic hilltop hotel was impeccable. Hiking is nearby. Special thanks to Nora for her hospitality and kindness.

We had a wonderful three nights in this very lovely hotel. The setting and views were superb as were the breakfasts and dinners (accompanied by delicious local wine) - and always served by smiling staff. Happy to recommend if you want peace and quiet.

What a find! Perched on the side of a hill top village with breath taking views into a gorge which is a nature reserve. We stayed in a first floor room with a balcony overlooking the gorge. The restaurant was also situated overlooking the gorge, the food really superb, with a substantial breakfast and excellent dinners. Ramon did us proud! All the staff were very helpful advising of places to visit, wines to taste, wildlife to see. All this and the exploration of the village. Just great!

Location

The neighbourhood

There’s enough to keep a nature-lover happy for ever: otters in the river, wild boar in the forest, and a vultures’ nesting area up the hill. The Reserva Natural de Caparreta is close by, as is the GR1 that crosses Spain. This is also medieval frontier land where the Moors and Christians fought, and hilltop settlements abound, including the more touristy Sos del Rey Católico where the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile were united.

Feel in heaven listening to the Gregorian chants of the monks of the abbey of Leyre and discover the secrets of the old kingdom of Navarre.
Discover the medieval city of Olite. Visit its Royal Palace, one of the best preserved in Europe, and feel like a King, Queen, Prince and Princess.
Walk through the "foz de lumbier" ( Lumbier canyon) , an impressive natural wonder where the Irati River has run for thousands of years; enjoy the company of the vultures along the way
The oldest village in Navarre now has only 28 inhabitants. If there is any place where silence is heard, it is this.

Ramon and his partner Patxi have upped sticks from San Sebastian, the culinary capital of Spain; no surprise that you eat brilliantly here. Amusing, cultured and welcoming, they are knowledgeable about the wildlife and reel off history with ease. Proud of their creation and looking for the “right sort of guests”, they are wonderful hosts.
