The
Experience

This 18th-century Navarran mansion house is set in a small hamlet with stunning views across a valley towards distant hills. It’s been sensitively restored by Iosu and his brother, with the original stone walls, grand staircase and high ceilings remaining.

Breakfast is in the large dining room next to the fireplace – local sheep’s cheese, salami, seasonal fruit and yoghurt, plus homemade bread and jams and honey from Iosu’s brother’s bees. Decide at breakfast if you want to stay in for three-course dinners or drive ten minutes to Los Arcos for restaurants.

Find board games in the dining area and a games room in the cellar; sit out on the terrace. Foodies will delight in the local specialties – asparagus, truffles, salami, local wines, olive oil; you can explore historic Roman sites and towns or ride bikes along the Via Verde.

Reviews

Ioar is an impressive mansion house in a stunning setting with sweeping landscape. Absolute peace and quiet in this little hamlet. Lovely comfortable rooms and beautiful apartments finished to a very high standard. Some very interesting towns nearby with Romanesque architecture and excellent, delicious local produce.

Location

The neighbourhood

The house is set in the quiet hamlet of Sorlada, on a hillside below an impressive Baroque church, Basílica San Gregorio Ostiense. The closest shops and restaurants are in Los Arcos, a 10-minute drive, but larger shops, bars and restaurants can be found in Estella, a 20-minute drive. The Circuito de Navarra racing track and the Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail are both less than ten minutes’ drive. Ask about hikes in the area with amazing views, and there are historic Roman towns to visit such as Estella and Puente la Reina (both half an hour). Pamplona is an hour away.

Local points of interest from Iosu Martinez

  • Our philosophy is to offer a very warm and simple atmosphere, without frills, making you feel at home. Moreover, we are passionate about the environment and all of the energy we use is green and sustainable.
  • Our breakfasts and dinners are homemade and we try to use excellent local and seasonal products as well as some eco-products. Enjoy our excellent honey, jams, biscuits, cookies and homemade bread… as well as local artisan products.
  • From the hotel we can suggest several walks: visit S. Gregorio monastery, enjoy the privileged landscapes of the surrounding area and discover the large magical rock on the side of the monastery.
  • The historic centre of the city of Estella-Lizarra is only a 20-minute drive. Here, in July, you can attend the medieval fair, visit the Jewish quarter and enjoy the excellent food and music.
  • Visit Pamplona's historical site only 45 minutes by car or Olite and its medieval castle. Explore Vitoria- Gasteiz, its famous cathedral and medieval quarter, the natural parks of Urbasa with the source of the river Urederra, or Izki and its golf course.
  • The hotel is only 1 hour 30 min from Bilbao airport and 2 hours 30 min from Santander harbour. There are also many activities available in the area: visit the wine shops, the Truffle Museum, hire bikes, visit cheese shops, salt marshes, caves, farms.

Introducing

Iosu Martinez

Iosu owns a renovation company with his brother and also loves art and sculpture – he is very proud of his excellent sculptures on display in the cellar next to the games room. He lives on site in the high season (July to end September) and otherwise is based in Pamplona with his family, visiting at weekends.
