The Experience

Walk through the entrance hall in to a big, light living space with an open-plan kitchen, lovely views from an L-shaped sofa, interesting art on the walls and wide doors to the terrace – on warmer days you’ll eat out here, or maybe have a barbecue, with views over the garden to open countryside. There’s a little stream you can walk down to for paddling, a lawn for games and an enclosed swimming pool you may use.

Owners Lisa and Matt leave you a selection of locally-made goodies – cider, fudge, biscuits, all the basics for cooking and fresh flowers from the garden. You may also be treated to eggs from their hens. Lisa is a serious cook so you’ll find everything from a salad spinner to a rolling pin and a pestle and mortar. On cooler days, help yourself to logs for the wood-burner – the first basket is free.

A 15-minute walk will take you to a good pub and you can stock up in Barnstaple which has an excellent butcher and deli.

Reviews

We had the Christmas week at The Stables and had an absolutely wonderful time. The property was super cozy, especially with the log burner and it is beautifully decorated throughout. During our stay, we enjoyed some fabulous walks along the nearby Tarka Trail, National Trust property Arlington Court and also the South West Coastal Path at Saunton Sands. Hosts Matt and Lisa are extremely friendly and very helpful.

We had two lovely weeks in this cottage. It is a lovely location nestled in a quiet valley a couple of miles from Barnstaple. Lovely gardens, and a gorgeous swimming pool - note this is shared with others but this worked for us. The cottage is close to a bigger house which sometimes the hosts live in and sometimes let - this was fine for us but might not suit you if you want complete privacy. The hosts were charming. The house was cleverly designed, beautifully presented and extremely comfortable.

We spent a glorious week at The Stables. My two teenagers loved the hot tub, pool and trampoline. The cottage has all mod cons, is beautifully designed and decorated and is set within the most gorgeous, picture book gardens, filled with birds during the day and bats in the evening. We particularly liked the extra touches, such as the welcoming vase of fresh flowers from the garden, lovely shampoo/soap and body lotions in the two glamorous en suites and the pots of herbs on the private terrace. Lisa and Matt are a font of local knowledge and delightful hosts.

Kirstin, Amersham

Fabulous place - really well equipped and spacious, high quality furnishings and spotlessly clean. Blissfully quiet and picturesque location. At the end of sunny beach days it's time for a barbecue on the patio gazing at the stars. On wet days, looking out from the comfy sofa onto the rolling countryside. This was our second stay at the Stables and even better than last year with the addition of a hot tub! We are planning our return for next year... Matt and Lisa are lovely hosts - leave you to your own devices but always on hand if needed.

Jim, Windsor

Bring your bikes, surfboards, buckets and spades and binoculars - you're halfway between Exmoor and the coast for wonderful days out rockpooling or birdwatching and hiking or having a picnic on a wide sandy beach. Return to beautiful, generous interiors and a serious cooks kitchen.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're between Exmoor and the coast for the best of both worlds. National cycle route 3 runs past the driveway and a footpath crosses the farm for walks into the surrounding countryside or to Goodleigh and the pub. Saunton sands is a 20-minute drive for a sandy beach but you can also drive a further ten minutes for tiny rocky coves you'll have all to yourselves. Surfers can easily reach Croyde.

Local points of interest from Lisa Eckford

  • Just a short stroll through the woods along the public footpath that runs through our farm you will find the New Inn at Goodleigh. The food is fantastic and Justin and Julia are wonderful hosts. Wellies can be provided.
  • A few miles up the road and you will be at the edge of Exmoor National park where there are wonderful moorland and coastal walking opportunities and plenty of lovely pubs. We have an intimate knowledge of the area and can provide advice and OS maps.
  • Along the North Devon coast there are many spectacular beaches including Croyde, Saunton Sands, Woolacombe and Putsborough. Great for walking or surfing. As a keen surfer Matt can offer you some advice should you need it.
  • Right from the farm gate there are endless cycling opportunities. Climbing onto Exmoor or onto the Tarka Trail which is the longest dedicated cycle way in the country. The Tarka trail runs to Braunton or Torrington and is easy cycling free from traffic.
  • The Royal Horticultural Society garden Rosemoor is at Torrington, about 30 minutes drive away. There are also other open gardens nearby - Marwood Hill, Tapeley Park and Docton Mill among them.
  • The National Trust has numerous sites and properties nearby including Arlington court, Knightshayes, Killerton and Watersmeet among them.

Introducing

Lisa Eckford

Lisa and Matt were both investment bankers in London - although Lisa should definitely have been an interior designer. They realised they were spending all their time escaping London and heading for the countryside as they both love running, cycling, swimming and generally being outdoors. So they moved down here, and are very happy running The Stables and farming on a small scale.
