This could make your heart sing: a quirky, cosy wooden cabin down a track on the edge of a dingly Devon wood. Take it easy on your sun-soaked deck, you could well decide to hole-up here, wandering just as far as the pretty orchard garden. Inside is basically one big timber-clad living and sleeping space. A hefty wood-burner warms the whole place and treasures squirreled away on family travels have been unearthed and dotted about: a woven throw on the handmade bed with white cotton sheets, wall hangings and a Mexican copper basin in the dinky shower room. Nick has been a furniture maker most of his life, and built the cabin almost single-handed – sourcing local, reclaimed wood, waste wool for insulation and eco-paints. Dolly is an artist in her own right, and she'll help you uncover your creative side on one of her workshops; as will Nick with his wood working skills. With their young family, they are quietly chasing their dream and have happily chosen to share it. It's pretty much perfect: the adventurous can walk to a good pub and there are really wonderful beaches and coastal walks, pretty riverside villages and chic sailing towns very close. Plenty of slow travel, too – from boat to the steam trains in Dartmouth. Utterly enchanting.
