Sweep along the Dart estuary, past the bobbing boats of Kingsbridge, to your immaculate cottage, one of six on this private estate tucked into a peaceful valley. This is – was – an ecclesiastical farm with cottages, each named after a vicar! Too small to be called a resort, it is nevertheless terrific for families and bliss for couples (at quieter times). Each holiday home has its living room upstairs to make the most of the views; most have wood-burners; five have private patios tucked neatly at the back (Colby's being the sunniest). Kitchens are new, with black granite worktops and every mod con, bathrooms sport Heritage suites, solid oak floors gleam and dramatic ceiling timbers add character. Furnishings are uncluttered, smart, stylish and new; beds are luxuriously comfy. Outside: Wendy house and play areas, short tennis and indoor heated pool, a secret garden and walks galore. Thoughtful Hazel and her team keep it all spotless, and have an array of treats to take the strain off you: ask about 'the first 24 hours hamper', discounts at the local golf and country club and, best of all, your own marine biologist to take everyone rock-pooling.
