The Barnhouse at Drumkeerin

201a Torr Road, Cushendun, Co. Antrim
Ulster, United Kingdom

Hens wander, cats doze by the stream of this barn in the garden: a child's dream. Charming owners, views of distant sea - a blissful setting

What a remarkable couple, gently retired into an early taste of paradise, strong-minded and active, both artists and art historians. Mary takes centre stage with her love of life and people, her sparkling talk of art and artists (original paintings and cartoons cover the walls), Ireland and the Irish. Joe quietly fills all the other roles with his strength, humour and wisdom. They chose their house for the heart-stopping view of hills and distant sea – "we are working with the scenery" they say – and you can only tear yourself away by walking out into it; now they have renovated the barn in the lower garden and opened it to self-catering guests. It has a pristine interior and a lovely garden view from its (narrow but very well-equipped) kitchen. The sitting room has a rust and green colour scheme and two sofas, the main bedroom has views across hills and the glens, the others are pleasantly plain with velux windows. A tamed garden and beautiful orchard leads to woodland and a rushing stream – a child's dream. The hens wander, the cats doze. A place of heart and humanity against an overawing backdrop of natural power and beauty.
