The setting is bucolic. At the end of the narrow lane, you park your car, drop down steep steps into a grove of lemons – yours to plunder! – and kind Pilar shows you to your casita, tucked discreetly to the side of her house. With its own gorgeous garden and terrace in the shade of a wisteria, wafted by aromas of lavender and with sweeping views across the valley, it's as lovely a spot as any we've seen. Inside: a modern Mallorcan décor, fresh and open plan, with a bright little kitchen beautifully equipped, a sofa and wood-burner for cool nights, and two handsome bedrooms, one opening to the terrace, the other up above. Windows are shuttered and netted, floors are new terracotta, bathrooms are heaped with towels and treats, and one room has a claw-foot tub behind the bedwall. No pool, but that's no hardship when Soller's port and beach are a 15-minute drive. Swim, snorkel, sail and dive, then wander into town for restaurants and the atmospheric tram, or catch the train to Palma. Return to paradise and nothing to disturb you, bar the cicadas and the odd vocal dog. As for the walking, it's spectacular.
