The Experience

On its own private headland between two beaches – a sandy one for swimming and surfing, the other for exploring rock pools – this is an enchanting spot. Explore the long stretches of coastal path in either direction, and walk the gentle 2-mile track to Padstow. Go barefoot all week and bask on the terrace overlooking Rocky Beach, where the sun shines from late morning until the invariably spectacular sunset – you’re so close to the water you can leave your towel here or lower a basket down for a beach picnic.

Kids will love running around on the large level garden overlooking Trevone Bay while grown-ups light up the barbecue and enjoy a beer. Hunkering down in the house during a westerly gale or spring tide is quite something – you can watch the waves crashing over the rocks from your bed. It’s not unusual for the front garden to fill with foam from the sea.

You’ll find a cream tea waiting for you in the well-equipped kitchen.

Reviews

Such a beautiful, intriguing warren of a home to explore (hide and seek anyone?). You have exhilarating close-up views of the ocean from every window and your own bit of private headland nestled between two beaches. There's so much to do and to see right here: swimming, beach-combing, snorkelling, observing the ever-changing seascape and its wildlife... whatever floats your boat. Just lovely.

Meredith, Edinburgh

Our group of four adults and three children had a brilliant week at Pentonwarra. It is a truly remarkable property, with the sea lapping at its foundations and its own private headland. It's comfortable, cosy and very well equipped, with thoughtful features like a welcome basket of local produce, and a warm shower outdoors for rinsing off. We went body boarding on the sandy beach and rockpooling on the rocky beach; we swam in the sea pool; we walked to the Padstow Farm Shop for local cheese and huge cinammon buns; we went fishing off Round Hole point (and ate our catch for dinner). Wonderful.

Richard, Bromley

Our second holiday at Pentonwarra as we love the house, the location and the friendly local people. It's been such a terrible time we have all suffered with Covid and the measures taken to make our stay as safe as possible was really appreciated by us. The week was just what we wanted with every family member enjoying themselves and wishing we had booked a second week! Good luck to the Porters for a successful season and thank you.

Andrew, Cardiff

Extremely well arranged, home has everything you need, and the views are everything you ever wanted. If you have little ones, rocky beach for crabs, shrimps and other exciting things and a wonderful sandy beach for sand castles and paddling/swimming. Never stayed at a better location.

David, Westward Ho! Devon

This is a truly awesome place, house is magical, gardens unique and views wonderful. House is very well appointed with views from each room, also Sid the seagull will visit each day and tap on kitchen window 😂 You have parking for 3 cars and space in the house for everyone, the balcony over the rookie beach is superb. Pentonwarra PARADISE!

Location

The neighbourhood

Trevone Bay (1 mile) and Mother Ivey’s Bay (1.5 miles) can be reached by the coast path from the front door, but the one at the tip of your toes may just feel like your own private beach. Visit Padstow (2 miles) and eat at one of Rick Stein’s seafood restaurants, join the Camel Trail and explore a piece of history at Prideaux Place. Trevose Head Lighthouse is visible from the house.

Local points of interest from The Pentonwarra Trustees

  • Rocky Beach is right on Pentonwarra’s doorstep, and perfect for poking around in rock pools, sunning yourself on baking rocks, swimming in the natural swimming pool, and skimming stones. Or you can just watch everyone else from your private balcony!
  • On the other side of Pentonwarra's private headland lies Trevone Bay, which offers perfect sandcastle-building sand and exciting Atlantic waves for swimming and body-boarding, and is watched over by lifeguards in the summer months.
  • Ten minutes' walk away, in a clifftop field overlooking Trevone Bay on the other side, is the strange natural phenomenon of the Round Hole. When the tide is low, you can climb down it and walk through a natural arch to the rocks at the foot of the cliffs.
  • From Pentonwarra's front door, a glorious stretch of north Cornwall’s coast path leads west to the perfect golden sands (and surf school) at Harlyn Bay and to the lighthouse at Trevose Head, and east to the Camel Estuary and Padstow beyond.
  • The pretty fishing village of Padstow is less than an hour's walk away over lovely countryside (or a little further via the coast path). There you'll find excellent seafood (not least from Rick Stein), the Camel Trail, Prideaux Place, art, shops, and more.
  • Within an hour's drive are Lanhydrock House, the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Bodmin Moor and Bodmin Jail, the Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway, as well as Port Isaac, Rock, and Newquay, to name just a few of the area's many attractions.

Introducing

The Pentonwarra Trustees

This seaside home has been in the Porter family ever since it was bought by a great-great-uncle over 80 years ago, and it's now managed by trustees. The family think it was once a shepherd's cottage but it has been extended over the years into a family home and now it's a wonderful holiday retreat. They've spent many happy beach holidays here and they hope that other families will love it as much as they do.
