The Experience
Shoot past the tourists to land in the Eden Valley with its vast hills, moody skies, single track roads and majestic river running through it. The house is pretty in the local sandstone pink with woodwork and sash windows painted in the estate colours. Cook together in the sociable kitchen warmed by a humming Aga, eat at a table in the bay window overlooking the water, looking out for ducks, swans and geese. Find homemade biscuits and a bottle of wine waiting.
Take a book to the separate sitting room and unwind by an open log fire on comfy sofas; fabrics are vibrant, rugs come in bright colours, an eclectic collection of art hangs on the walls and every window has stunning views framed by thick curtains. Bedrooms upstairs have high ceilings and big beds with feather and down pillows; bathrooms gleam and the prevailing feel is one of light and warmth.
Bring paddle boards and kayaks, barbecue on the terrace, make happy memories.

A truly fabulous stay. Abbott Moss is even better than the photos!!! - first the location is stunning breath-taking scenery, with a view of the lake from most windows to constantly watch and enjoy. nicely tucked away to feel secluded yet close to drive to all the attractions and go walking. Inside is beautifully appointed. Upstairs with really good sized bedrooms and comfortable beds . Stylish fittings and good sized bathrooms. Downstairs -kitchen with aga and dining area with bay window a delight to cook in. Extremely well equipped. Everything we wanted and more⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a stunning house in a fabulous location! If you want to get away from it all in style this is the place for you. It’s quite remote but that makes it special for me. Down a long private road you arrive at this lovely lakeside home. The views of the lake from the house are spectacular. Once inside the house you can see & feel the quality of a homely and comfortable house well thought outwith nice touches including the Sonos system, Log burner & a great Aga. Everything from the beds, linen, cutlery, kitchen utensil’s etc were of a very high standard. The furnishings were exceptional.

Location
The neighbourhood
A 25-minute walk along the quiet road takes you to Lacy's Caves and Long Meg and Her Daughters. Stock up at Booths in Penrith (the Waitrose of the north) or two superb butchers. Kirkoswald has two good pubs, wild swimming spots (careful, the current is very strong) and lovely walks. Take tea at Granny Dowbekin's in Pooley Bridge, or visit The Secret Garden for great food - from burgers to posh nosh.
Local points of interest from Tamar Ferguson
- The Northern Lakes are just on the doorstep - your closest are Ullswater (with its steamers) and Derwentwater with it's glorious views and lakeside walks.
- Lowther Castle with gardens to explore, an adventure playground and great cafe.
- Rheged with it's subterranean shopping is perfect for rainy days. There is an art gallery, cafe, deli and independent shops. The Lake Artists hold their annual exhibition there.
- Cumbria is renowned for its farmers markets and regional food. Check out https://www.thelakedistrict.org
- Book Seasonal Trout or Salmon Fishing in the River Eden through the Lazonby Estate where Abbott Moss is located
- Hutton in the Forest has events throughout the year - the Potfest, outdoor Shakespeare, garden tours and, of course, a great cafe!

I don't know where to start. Abbot Moss is the most wonderful place to stay. Its setting in a lovely rural location, down a private road and with its own lake is beautiful and tranquil. The geese, ducks, pheasants, oyster catchers, birds of prey, sheep and lambs, rabbits and squirrels are all around together with an abundance of insect life which is heartening. The house is full of light and has beautiful views from every aspect. It's a loved house, very comfortable and practical and each room is a joy of colour, warmth and comfort. It has everything you might need to enjoy your stay. Heaven!
