The Experience

It’s utterly peaceful and secluded at this wooden cabin. Circled by nine acres of wildflower meadows and mature trees, it’s a riot of colour in summer and teems with wildlife; grab binoculars and spot woodpeckers, goldcrests and finches. Stroll to the top of the hill for glimpses of the sea.

Inside all is comfy and cosy: a light-filled lounge with books and games, Netflix and Prime; a small but neat galley kitchen; a double bedroom overlooking the garden with proper linen and pillows; a shiny bathroom with bath and walk-in shower. It’s a lovely place to hang out after exploring Totnes, Salcombe or Dartmouth.

There are walks from the door, good cycling, and heaps of excellent foodie places to test; try Restaurant Twenty Seven in Kingsbridge for a gourmet experience. There’s good sailing, surfing and paddle boarding nearby. Eat on the deck, have a nightcap by the fire pit; stargaze across the dark skies, listen for owls.

This property is a definite 10 out of 10! Myself and my husband wanted a break somewhere away from it all in beautiful surroundings, Meadow Lodge certainly gave us that. The cottage is spacious but cosy, with everything you need. A great bathroom, a very comfortable bed where you can see straight out to the gardens and watch the wildlife and then venture onto the terrace for morning coffee. We were fortunate to have the best weather during our stay, but the cottage would be equally comfortable and cosy if the weather had not been so kind. Julia and Mark were the kindest of hosts too, thankyou!

Karen

WOW! What an absolute gem of a property to go on holiday to. We had lots of plans to visit many places with a full itinerary until we arrived and went into Meadow Lodge. Instantly, we felt completely relaxed with this stunningly beautiful property with incredible surrounds including nature and wildlife in abundance... Nothing was too much trouble and they made us feel extremely welcome - so much so that we are going back in October. I feel like I am already counting the days until our next battery recharge! HIGHLY recommended.

Briony, Oxford

This is a very special place in a unique setting. The lodge is comfortable and beautifully decorated, with extra touches such as fresh flowers. Very little to disturb other than the birdsong and deer wandering through the distant trees. Mark and Julia were wonderful hospitable hosts. We were lucky with the weather and were spoilt for choice for beaches and coastal walks close by, plus Totnes and Dartmouth. We’ve stayed at many places through Sawdays and this has to be one of the very best.

Nina, Burwash

We had a wonderful comfortable stay. The lodge is perfect - cosy, secluded and fitted with everything you would need, including a very comfy bed. We sat and watched the birds feeding, and gazed at the brightest stars we’ve ever seen. Julia and Mark are amazing hosts and made us feel very welcome. We would definitely return and recommend it to our friends.

Location

The neighbourhood

You can walk to the nearest pub (The George Inn) and village shop in Blackawton (1.5 miles). The shop sells everything but you're only seven miles from Totnes which bustles with independents and has a thriving market on Fridays and Saturdays. The Bull Inn serves delicious organic food. Dartmouth is nine miles, Kingsbridge is seven, Salcombe ten. Join sections of the coast path for excellent walks.

Introducing

Julia & Mark Marshall

Julia is a film producer, writer, documentary maker and keen cook, and Mark is now also a writer, having previously travelled the globe for work with his binoculars always near to hand – he’s an avid birdwatcher and student of butterflies. They moved here from Oxfordshire in 2012 and live in the big house on the estate. You can’t see this from the cabin, but they’re on hand should you need anything.
