The Experience

Peace and quiet reign at your 19th-century barn, where nothing but birdsong disturbs you. Set among 20 acres of conservation land, including lakes, woods and meadows, it’s perfect for a close group of friends or a couple seeking a romantic break. You’ll feel right at home in the light-filled open-plan living/kitchen/dining area, its fun fabrics and art adding character and wood-burner making everything wonderfully cosy.  Bedrooms are small but comfortable with one king-sized bed, and the shower room modern and spotless. You are warmly welcomed by owners Elaine and Adrian – who have won a gold Green Tourism award for the barn – live in the nearby farmhouse and are on hand should you need them, as are four-legged friends, with treats and towels available and even a dog shower outside for muddy days. Nature-lovers will delight in roaming the surrounding land, spotting wildlife along the way, there are Elaine’s cookery courses for the crafty and coastal paths, the Tarka trail and Bude’s wonderful surfing beaches for the adventurous. Hop in the car (you can use the EV charging point too) and try one of the great restaurants in the area; return to sit out in the garden and gaze up at the stars.

Reviews

We spent a week in The Old Piggery. We arrived to homemade bread, scones and jam (and other delicious things too). It’s cosy but not cramped and very comfortable. We felt very cared for and Elaine and Adrian had really thought about what makes a great holiday stay. But also with care and consideration for the environment. It is a haven and so tranquil. We have a dog and she was made very welcome. Especially by Ralph, the handsome lurcher. Walks and great pubs close by. Would we visit again? Yes, most definitely.

Carol, Huddersfield

We had the most wonderful stay at this exceptionally lovely cottage in Devon. Attention to detail was taken to the next level with homemade bread, scones, butter, milk and jam ready on arrival, kindling and wood all laid up for what was the cosiest stay possible. Super attention to the sustainable aspect of living and lovely walks to do both on and off the property. Thank you so much to Adrian, Elaine and Ralph for making us so very very welcome. We will be back!

Sheena, Carnforth, Lancashire

We had a lovely stay at The Old Piggery. It is a comfortable, fully and attractively furnished cottage with lots of privacy. Elaine and Arnold make sure you want for nothing. The site is a great base for exploring the north coast of Devon and Cornwall

Greetje, Zwolle

What a gem! A place of absolute peace and quiet apart from birdsong and occasional baas from Dylan and Wonky, the sheep. The Old Piggery is a perfect base from which to explore the area and magnificent coastline. The attention to detail in the cottage is fantastic and very much appreciated. Elaine and Adrian are exceptional hosts who provided us with lots of local information. Their wide ranging combined talents are impressive - from land regeneration to soap making and a great deal more in between. Our only regret was that we had to leave!

We enjoyed a fabulous 5 night stay in the Old Piggery. Really comfortable, very well appointed and immaculately clean. The owners are delightful and very helpful. A very comprehensive welcome pack, which included: homemade scones cream tea, bread, milk and a bottle of wine. It was great to be able to just walk out the door with our dogs and explore acres of woodland, ponds and fields. Great position for the coast and beaches. Highly recommended!

Adrian, Oving, Bucks

Absolutely gorgeous cottage in the most peaceful setting, you really couldn't wish for more. The cottage itself is tastefully furnished and super comfy; the best nights sleep we've had in a long time! Based in a small hamlet 15 minutes away from Bideford, Kerswell is an ideal base for exploring the North Devon coast. Elaine, Adrian and Ralph the Lurcher were friendly hosts and the cream tea on arrival was most welcome after a long drive, as were the goodies which were also waiting for us. Did not want to come home and would not hesitate to recommend.

Theresa, Southampton

Absolutely delightful. Elaine and Adrian have created a conservation haven, and were exceptional hosts. The Piggery was beautifully designed and well equipped, and the walks around the property were stunning. A peaceful and relaxing place to stay.

Caroline, Liskeard

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Piggery It was very well laid out and equiped and everything you would excpect from a Sawday cottage The grounds are peaceful and beautiful and I couldnt put my paintbrush down. It is an evironmental haven. Elaine and Adrian are wonderful kind hosts and all the lovely foody bits were delicious We are already booked to go again

What a wonderful place to spend a holiday. The Old Piggery is a high spec and tastefully decorated cottage, the hosts are welcoming, thoughtful and considerate and the setting is amazing. It was a delight watching the huge variety of birds on the feeder and exploring the extensive grounds: ponds, woodland and restored meadows. In addition there are lots of interesting places to visit nearby. We are looking forward to a return visit. Highly recommended.

What a peaceful week! We stayed in the Old Piggery at Kerswell farm in North Devon in July. This beautifully converted farm building provided for our every need and comfort, as did our delightful hosts. The conservation land around us was lush and green. The lakes, with water lilies, dragonflies and the occasional splash of fish were idyllic. While the meadows, full of wildflowers, including orchids, showed us nature at its best. The birdsong was a joy, as we watched the birds coming and going. The lazy, hazy days of summer at the piggery passed all too quickly, but we will be back!

Carrie, Budleigh Salterton, East Devon

Only five days and absolutely not long enough. There is so much to do in the area from coastal walks to crabbing in nearby Appledore and on top of that you don't really want to leave the comfort of The Old Piggery. Beautiful and peaceful surrounds and fabulous accommodation. Incredibly well laid out, immaculate, amazing bedding, a delicious cream tea on arrival, and everything you could want outside as well as in. Friendly hosts where nothing was too much trouble. Can't wait to go back!

Susan, London

We had a utterly superb time staying for a week at The Old Piggery. The cottage was superbly equipped with everything and more you could wish for, the beds were incredibly comfortable and Elaine and Adrian fabulous hosts. We enjoyed relaxing walks around the grounds, while the information pack was full of information with spot on recommendations. We used it as our tour guide, taking us to fabulous beaches, villages and walks. As strongly recommended we requested Elaine cook a dinner for us and we could see why this is so strongly advised - a truly sensational dinner. Utterly superb.

Gary, Gerrards Cross

We had booked our stay at The Old Piggery before Covid took hold and as our arrival date coincided with the relaxation of lockdown restrictions we wondered how things would go . However Elaine kept us regularly updated and informed about the measures that had been put in place to keep everyone safe and all went smoothly. Everywhere was spotlessly clean with plenty of soap, hot water and hand sanitiser. We were even able to sample Elaine's superb cooking with socially distanced dishing up through the door. Not only high quality accommodation but safe as well. Thank you Elaine and Adrian

Veronica, Eastbourne

What a beautiful place to stay. The cottage is done up to a supremely high standard and is as cosy as can be. The area has plenty of great walking, and is so well located for beaches and beautiful countryside. Elaine and Adrian (and Ralph!!) were so welcoming. We're already planning our next visit!

Ruarc, Bristol

If you are thinking about a stay in North Devon this is the place to stay. The cottage is lovely and the hosts are wonderful. All the extras you get are just amazing.Very tasty cream tea, homemade bread and lots of other lovely treats. We knew the weather was going to be foul but having the lovely warm cottage to come back to made it worthwhile.

SHARON, Alresford

Had a really wonderful stay with perfect weather. The cottage is probably the best we’ve stayed in – so many lovely finishing touches and useful bits and pieces. Really enjoyed the tranquillity and watching the birds on the feeders. The area is fabulous for walking – wild Hartland, picturesque Clovelly and dramatic scenery at Mortehoe. Hope to be back soon.

Cath and Kev, Lancaster

Well, what a delightful, well-equipped cottage in a tranquil setting. Beautiful beaches and walks nearby, made even better with the brilliant weather we were lucky to have. Worth a visit to Northam Burrows, what an expanse of sand!!! Although it’s also pleasant just wandering around the grounds to get lost in the peace and quiet. Elaine and Adrian are friendly, very helpful hosts, and if you opt for ‘eating in’ with one of Elaine’s meals, you won’t be disappointed! Yup, we had a very nice week.

Robbie, Jane and Spike, Kingston-upon-Thames

Thank you so much for your hospitality and generosity and for creating the most comfortable, welcoming cottage in the oasis of peace and calm that is Kerswell Farm. We feel relaxed and very content after our stay with you. The Piggery is just the perfect base to explore this unspoilt part of Devon. We’ve enjoyed the walks and scenery (our favourites were Hartland Quay, Sandymouth and the Bucks Mills/Peppercombe walk), almost as much as we enjoyed your delicious baking! It’s so lovely to find somewhere so well thought out and genuine in its intent and delivery. We would love to come back

Vikki and Paul, Trowbridge

A real gem of a place to stay. The cottage had everything we needed plus more. Hospitality exceeded expectations especially with the greeting of home-made scones, bread as well as a bottle of wine on arrival. Even catered for our dog ‘Louie’ with some dog biscuits which was a very nice touch. As recommended, Northam Burrows is a great place to walk and Lydford Gorge is an absolute must! We also liked Instow, which is a lovely place to sit and have a drink. Overall, a fabulous week and we will recommend this to our friends. Thanks for everything.

Neil and Roohi, Midhurst

Thank you Elaine and Adrian and especially Ralph! You made us feel at home straight away... Such a lovely location for a relaxing break away (apart from the amazing walks and cycling). We really loved the woodburner and the homely ambience you have created in the Piggery. Fantastic meal on our first evening, hence all the walking/cycling afterwards! We hope to return sometime soon. We wish you luck with all you are trying to achieve on the farm.

Local points of interest from Elaine & Adrian Arnold

  • Explore the 20 beautiful acres at Kerswell Farm. Lakes, woodland, culm meadow and a big field for letting dogs run free. The lakes are so peaceful and the wildlife is amazing! Just sit, enjoy the dragonflies over the waterlilies and feel yourself unwind.
  • The variety and numbers of birds around the land is astonishing - every type of tit imaginable, finches galore, woodpeckers, waterfowl, jays and of course our resident owls never fail to entertain. Plenty of good spots to watch from.
  • Some of the very best North Devon beaches are close by; spectacular Bucks Mills, Sandymouth, Welcombe Mouth, Northam Burrows and Peppercombe to name just a few. Fabulous for surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, walks, beachcombing and rock-pooling!
  • Quaint Clovelly is just 10 minutes away with its steep cobbled streets leading down to the ancient harbour. Festivals like crab and lobster and herring are regularly held and it's a great place to spend a day. Visit the walled garden at Clovelly Court too.
  • Spectacular gardens abound in the area, RHS Rosemoor, Docton Mill, Hartland Abbey and Marwood Hill gardens are all wonderful and full of ideas to inspire you. Discover the great variety of local cafes and pubs along the way for a sustaining break!
  • The skies here are truly dark and stargazing is a real treat on a clear night. Lie back with a blanket and a warming drink and just marvel at what is above you (so romantic). Use our binoculars to bring the stars and moon even closer...
