The Experience

Follow the babbling Mill Race to a quiet corner of Hawes to find this beautifully converted piece of Wensleydale history. The old Mill Fosse Cottage, with its blend of quirky touches, thick stone walls, flagged floors and exposed beams, is a snug, stylish retreat.

Within a couple of minutes, you’re in the heart of Hawes. Visit the Wensleydale Creamery and Museum, browse the antique shops or have a lazy lunch by the river. The Dales are ready to be explored, or you can take the short walk to Hardraw Falls and the pub next door.

Two people can spread out a bit here. Cook in the sociable kitchen (there are stools for chatterers), eat in the dining hall then relax in the upstairs sitting room in front of the wood-burner.

Reviews

George & Sandra, West Lothian

We always look forward to our stay at the cottage-this was our third visit and just as lovely and peaceful as our first two. It was the perfect escape after our covid lockdown. The cottage is always so welcoming and it’s the little touches and attention to detail that make it a really special place. The dogs always enjoy seeing what little treats have been left for them.

Tony & Jackie, Northants

Thank you so much for letting us stay at the cottage. It was lovely and extremely well fitted out to high standards. It is also ideally situated in a beautiful area of the country and we very much enjoyed our stay here.

Neill & Yvonne, Essex

An absolutely amazing place to stay. The quality, quirkiness and comfort of the accommodation is outstanding. We have thoroughly enjoyed our time here, we will be back.

Stjohn & Emma, Oxfordshire

Wonderful stay! The cottage is beautiful, so well appointed and such thoughtful extras provided, even down to our dog. Our first but certainly not our last visit.

Liam & Lauren, Essex

Second time here and just as lovely as I remember! So wonderful to be here in the summer with the stable door open. The welcome hamper for us and Jake the dog was so appreciated. Thank you for another wonderful stay in such perfect surroundings

Location

The neighbourhood

Hawes is a vibrant, bustling market town - a self-sustaining working community – set in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Home to the Wensleydale Creamery and Museum, a renowned Ropemakers and weekly sheep and furniture auctions. Within a stone’s throw of the cottage are good pubs and cafes, traditional food stores and antique shops. It’s surrounded by wonderful walking country and Aysgarth Falls, captured by Turner, Ruskin and Wordsworth, is a 20-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Sue & Ian Burrows

  • The Wensleydale Creamery is one of the top tourist destinations in the Dales. Just a short walk from the cottage you can watch the famous cheese being made, buy scrummy cheese to take home. If you love cheese this is the place for you.
  • The Dales Countryside Museum tells the story of the Yorkshire Dales and the local people who have shaped the landscape for thousands of years. There are galleries, special exhibitions, a funky cafe and gift shop filled with items made by local artists.
  • For culture vultures try Fountains, Bolton or Jervaulx abbeys or castles Skipton, Bolton and Middleham. There's also Newby Hall, Mount Grace Priory or Constable Burton Hall and not forgetting the Georgian theatre royal in Richmond.
  • From your doorstep there are fabulous walks taking in spectacular waterfalls, wonderful scenery, ancient woodlands, drystone walls, flower-rich hay meadows in the spring and not forgetting the sheep, there's a lot of them.
  • The impressive Hardraw Falls are located in a lovely woodland setting beside a river, worth a visit especially if has been raining as they positively thunder with energy. Kevin Costner took a dip in them in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.
  • If you fancy hiring bikes for the day go to Stage 1 Cycles, located in the beautiful old Hawes railway station. You could try the Tour de Yorkshire challenge over Buttertubs Pass. Or take it easier cycling around Hawes and the surrounding countryside.
