The Experience

One of three converted farm buildings set around a rustic courtyard on a working sheep farm. You’re high on the side of the Pentland Hills, ensconced in a rural idyll down a winding farm track but only ten miles from Edinburgh.

When the weather is foul cosy up by the wood-burner – there are plenty of books and games. The open-plan kitchen has all you need and ‘Cook’ in Morningside will deliver homemade meals to the door. In summer you’ll be in the garden (west facing for marvellous sunsets) with a barbecue. The Flotterstone Inn is ten minutes in the car.

Susan and her family live in the main farmhouse and are on hand if needed; they’ll leave you with locally made biscuits, fresh-cut flowers and as many logs from home-grown timber as you need. This is prime hill tramping territory, or head into Edinburgh for city thrills.

Reviews

Howard, Bath

We had at wonderful week at Steading cottage. The cottage itself is lovely, comfortable and really well equipped. It's garden is pretty and we loved the fire pit! The location is ideal - brilliant walking in the glorious Pentland Hills right from the doorstep, and also a handy base for longer trips. It was great to be based on a working farm and the owners arer really helpful and friendly. Very highly recommended, and we will be going back. Howard and Christine

Beautiful cottage in a lovely setting. Everything was perfect

lynnette, Long Crendon (near Oxford)

Steading cottage is a gem of a cottage. We stayed in the cold of January, but the cottage was toasty warm; there was a gorgeous log burning fire that we lit for effect rather than the need for warmth. The views from the bedroom windows of the surrounding scenery were delightful, and on one morning dusted with snow. On arrival there were delicious scones for us. A rucksack with thermos and mugs was helpfully provided to encourage us to get out there walking. There were plenty of maps provided to assist with that sort of project. I would love to go back there!

Lisa, Milton Keynes

This is a wonderful cottage with very nicely thought out spaces. The open downstairs is spacious and very cosy. The sofas are comfortable and the kitchen incredibly well equipped. Nothing extra needed. Easy drive into the city as well. The bedrooms are cosy and beds comfortable. The parking is easy. The storage is great and walking dogs straight out of the back door is absolutely wonderful. The family are great and live next door if you need them. We parked our car near the cottage so we could let wet dogs dry off before they came in

Sian, Baar

We visit Edinburgh once a year and our 'go to' place to stay is Eastside Cottages. We've stayed in three of the cottages but we especially like The Steading. It really is a home-from-home from the welcome tea and scones, the warming log fire and to the crisp bed linen with comfy pillows. The standard of cleanliness is always of an exceptionally high standard - as a working sheep farm - no easy task. Walks in the surrounding country are truly inspiring and yet you are only a few minutes from the centre of Edinburgh or border towns like Peebles. We wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else.

Location

The neighbourhood

Eastside Cottages are set in a quiet glen in Pentland Hills Regional Park, surrounded by hills sporting purple heather – look out for red grouse, peregrines, ravens and badgers. You’re only 12 miles from Edinburgh here; the nearest town is Penicuik, a ten-minute drive, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants, shops and a bus to Edinburgh that leaves every ten minutes.

Local points of interest from Susan & Jenny Cowan

  • The cottage is set amongst thousands of acres of stunning countryside with walking trails from the doorstep. Picnic in the hills, hike to the local pub or watch wildlife and the world go by from the nearest hilltop. Enjoy the enchanted woodland sauna yurt.
  • The cottage is at the centre of Eastside Farm - our working hill sheep farm. Old-fashioned grasses, herbs & heather illustrate the timeless values of our traditional farming systems. Red grouse, peregrines, ravens, wild hares & badgers are a common sight
  • Edinburgh, Scotland's compact, hilly capital city is jam-packed with great things to do and it's only a 10 mile drive from Eastside to the centre! Explore the cobbled streets of George St., Victoria St., Stockbridge, the West End and the Royal Mile.
  • The Lothians and beyond have so much to offer. From country spas, sandy beaches and surfing, to distilleries, skiing and sculpture parks. There’s lots to keep the whole family entertained without heading into the city.
  • Jupiter Artland is a magical place where you can immerse yourself in sculpture, walking around and sometimes through pieces as you explore the park. With pre-booking you can now swim in an art work with Joana Vasconcelos’ incredible Gateway piece.
  • Take a day trip to the coast, Sula boat trips will take you out into the Firth of Forth to spot gannets and puffins. Return to shore picking up fresh lobster and chips at the Lobster Shack open in the North Berwick harbour throughout the summer months.
