The Experience

Completed just after WWI for the Shands of Craigellie, this is an elegant house with sash windows, wide wooden doors and high ceilings. Take tea in the large drawing room with comfy sofa and chairs, an open fire, TV, books and games. Eat breakfast at the window: fruits from the farm shop in season, eggs from their hens, porridge, and the full Scottish experience including sausages and black pudding from the local butcher. Or anything you need for a special diet.

A sheltered garden has a handy bench for boots and you’re welcome to relax on the lawns with herbaceous beds, or find a sunny corner to read in. Walk down some steps into the Den of Alyth, an SSSI where the Alyth Burn tumbles through. In 20 minutes you are in the little town or can join longer walks.

Bedrooms in the West Wing are both a good size with duck feather and down duvets and Scottish Fine Soaps in sparkling bathrooms with showers.

My daughter and I had such a delightful stay at Craigellie House on our pre-Christmas Scottish tour. It was super to meet Liz and Charles and receive a lovely warm welcome into their beautiful home, with tea and home made mince pies on our arrival. Our two en-suite guest rooms were equally sumptuous and so warm with triple glazing to keep us cosy. Delicious breakfast in the guest lounge/dining room with a cosy log fire and our very own Christmas tree too. It was pure delight to meet the resident peacock and watch the squirrels dart amongst the trees in the beautiful landscaped gardens.

Craigellie totally won me over and I thoroughly enjoyed my 3-night stay. Out of season, but the weather was kind and the setting/location perfect for my needs. The owners are really welcoming and friendly and full of good advice, if you have specific questions. My bedroom was supremely comfortable, quiet and cosy. The ensuite was immaculately clean and the owners had provided some helpful extras. And who doesn't like breakfast with red squirrels hopping past the window? Go and stay here, you will not be disappointed.

Location

The neighbourhood

Explore Alyth with its shops, old bridge, quirky lanes and the river running through it all. There's a nice café where you can sit outside on a sunny day and The Lands of Loyal Hotel for a posh dinner. Join the Cateran Trail, a circular route which takes you through Blairgowrie. Visit Scone Palace, crowning place of Scottish kings or spot ospreys in the Loch of the Lowes nature reserve.

Local points of interest from Liz & Charlie Bushby

  • Craigellie is allegedly the last mansion house built in Scotland. It has huge character and lovely grounds. Guests love the peace and quiet; being in the country; breathing fresh air; listening to birdsong and watching red squirrels playing in the trees.
  • This area is a hidden gem - it's just 90 minutes north of Edinburgh, yet totally rural in a nice sort of way. You still have your home comforts, Wi-fi and plenty to do, but you have fertile farmland, wooded glens and the great outdoors on your doorstep.
  • If walking is your thing then you are spoilt for choice: The Cateran Trail, a 103km circular walk through spectacular countryside, passes just above Craigellie, while the scenic Angus glens and the magnificent Cairngorm mountains are all within easy reach.
  • For golfers there's so much choice: 2 courses in Alyth and 3 championship ones in Blairgowrie. Then there's Forfar, Kirriemuir and Strathmore - and all within 20 miles! Or for cyclists: lazy country lanes; rigorous hills or off-road tracks - take your pick
  • If you prefer castles, palaces and culture you won't be disappointed. Glamis Castle, Scone Palace and Blair Castle are all nearby. In Dundee the new V&A is worth a visit as are RRS Discovery (think Scott & Shackleton) and the McManus Art Gallery.
  • Although not coastal it's easy to get to some super east coast beaches, including St Andrews. Then there are numerous less well-known delights from standing stones and hill forts to local museums and a chance to tour a nearby Scottish tea-growing garden.

Introducing

Liz & Charlie Bushby

Liz and Charlie have set to work proving that it is possible to make an old house more eco-friendly. They have installed solar panels which feed into specialist water cylinders, a log-fired biomass boiler, massive insulation and magnetic secondary glazing, even an EV charger. They now need only 4% of their energy from fossil fuels. They love meeting people and sharing their house with guests.
