The Experience

Behind wrought-iron gates in quiet Aubepierre-sur-Aube, a pair of delightful cottages with revealed stone façades and walled gardens – La Tonnellerie sleeps four, and L’Entrepot is for five (plus another child) – come as a big group and take them together. Communal rooms in each are pretty and open-plan, mixing original features – flagged floors and raw beams, stone fireplaces – with wood-burners, coffee tables and comfy sofas. In the smaller of the two, La Tonnellerie, find one twin/double on the first floor and the master at the top; L’Entrepot has its double and two twins on the first floor. Warm friendly owners Tim and Sarah, whose holiday home is here too, are sticklers for detail, so count on fine linen and fresh towels. Best of all are the gardens. Sunny days mean lazy hours in your own private garden (entrance through the back door of each gite) or by the walled pool, flanked by trees and shared by both cottages. Stroll across crisp, secluded lawns to the wilder meadows beyond, where you’ll find an orchard (if it’s ripe, help yourself), a gigantic kids climbing frame, a grass badminton court and a fascinating old dovecote. Bike or hike the wooded, rolling winelands of Burgundy and Champagne, or drive 30 minutes to Langres or Chaumont for museums, markets and cathedrals.

Reviews

We had a wonderful stay at L’Entrepot with our two young children. The pool was a hit with us all and we very much enjoyed exploring the little villages nearby and the towns further afield! The house was very well equipped and done with lovely finishing touches such as fresh flowers in all the rooms and chilled cremant in the fridge. Tim and Sarah were wonderful hosts and went out of their way to ensure we had a great time. We’d highly recommend!

We had a lovely stay in L'Entrepot in this delightful part of France. Morning coffee under the fruit trees in the orchard (and delicious plums for breakfast), wild swimming in the river that runs along the valley, enjoying the clouds of house martins above the house and the barn owls that were nesting in the barn opposite, and sitting by the swimming pool listening to the village church clock chime the hours away. The hosts, Tim and Sarah, are delightful and helpful, and the house is well-equipped and had everything we needed. I am sure we will be back. Thank you.

This has been our second visit to La Tonnellerie. We loved staying in 2016 and wanted to return. It's the perfect place to get away from it all. The domaine is beautiful and tranquil, but there's also lots to do with badminton, table tennis, bikes and the lovely pool. We spent our days exploring the forests, river valleys and local villages followed by evenings barbecuing and relaxing at the domaine. We missed Tim and Sarah on our first visit, but were lucky to meet them this time around. They are lovely to chat to and put lots of energy into making it such a special place to stay.

We had a fantastic week staying at L'Entrepot with our three young boys. The swimming pool was amazing and there were endless places for the kids to explore and play. You name it...ball games, bikes, table tennis, climbing frames. The chocolate and almond croissants in neighbouring Arc-en-Barrois were incredible but meant at extra few lengths were needed in the swimming pool. Sarah and Tim were fantastically welcoming hosts and gave lots of useful advice on the local area.

It's no small feat to keep everyone happy in a family of five, but the combination of a beautiful property and outstanding hosting gave us a very special family holiday. Our children were thrilled with the freedom and space they had to enjoy the pool, climbing frame, orchard and table tennis. Cycling-mad Dad enjoyed fabulous bike rides in stunning countryside with advice from Tim on the best local routes (including boulangerie stops for fresh croissants). And Mum spent countless hours by the beautiful pool, and appreciated special touches like fresh flowers in the bedroom and lovely bed linen.

We absolutely loved our week at La Tonnellerie - it’s the perfect place to relax for a week. The photos don’t do it justice, the gîte has everything you need and the grounds are beautiful. We loved walking our dog through the forest, stopping off for a swim in the natural swimming spot and then lounging by the pool in the afternoons. Tim and Sarah are excellent hosts and even organised reservations for us. We can’t wait to come back!

We absolutely loved our stay here. The house is gorgeous and full of beautiful furniture and everything you need. My children absolutely loved the climbing frame and the pool. The surrounding area was beautiful in the autumn and we had a fabulous time exploring the nearby cities and towns. Sarah was absolutely fantastic at communicating with us. Highly recommend!

We have just returned home from a week in L'Entrepot - what a find! Beautifully furnished and decorated, well equipped and spotlessly clean! Sarah & Tim, the owners, were also on site staying in their holiday home next door and they were so welcoming, helpful and friendly. The pool is stunning and, although shared with the other guests, there is plenty of space for everyone and a more than adequate supply of sunbeds and parasols (which we definitely needed with temperatures in the high 30's!). We are now considering returning next year with friends and renting both properties!

The perfect antidote to a hectic few months. Our two boys loved the house and grounds, picking cherries in the orchard, playing in the treehouse, admiring the myriad of butterflies and hours by the pool. The location is ideal to get away from it all, with a river and forest nearby and little villages dotted around the valley. There are lovely running routes on very quiet roads too. We had pizza from the pizza van in nearby Arc and there is a good butcher for bbq evenings at home. If you are looking to escape, this place is hard to beat. Thanks to Tim and Sarah, who were great hosts.

We stayed at L’Entrepot for a week in August. What a relaxing and tranquil place to be in and get away from it all! The house is well-equipped and very comfortable, with the grounds full of activities for children to enjoy, including a wonderful pool area. Tim and Sarah are perfect hosts, with great hints and tips for things to do and enjoy in the immediate and surrounding areas. It’s a testament to the place that we managed not to get bored even when, unusually, the weather didn’t cooperate. Highly recommend!

Graeme, London

‘Wonderful place to holiday at as two families. Being 3 generations of the same family, it gave us the space we needed to chill and relax separately but at the same time spend time having fun together at the pool and playing games in the large garden and grounds’.

Etta, Harpenden

We had the most wonderful stay at Le Domaine Richot this summer. The quiet village of Aubepierre was the perfect antedote to our hectic family life with beautiful walks and great cycling (for the novice and professional). Sarah, Tim and their family were wonderful hosts providing guidance on things to do and places to see. For a family with teenagers there were various activities nearby (high ropes, water park etc) or for those wanting to relax the gardens/pool were the perfect place to unwind. Our accomodation L'Entrepot had eveything we might need and we thoroughly recommend a visit!

Angie, Saffron Walden

Our family (3 adults, 2 kids + dog) stayed at L'Entrepot for the Easter holidays and had a lovely time. The house was well equipped, clean and very comfortable - a real home from home, full of rustic French charm. The large gardens were safe, well maintained and provided plenty of space for the kids to run around and play. The pool area looked lovely tho a bit too chilly in April to make full use of it. Set in a quiet village with lots of river & woodland walks on the doorstep, and quiet roads for cycling. Lots to see and do within an hours drive, would love to go back.

I fully agree with the other comments - probably the best self-catering I've stayed in over our last 6 years of staying in France - and a big hit with our 11 year old daughter. We stayed in La Tonellerie - very clean, peaceful and charming, with constant hot water and a good supply of thick towels! Some fantastic cultural sites to visit nearby - Troyes, Chaumont, Langres, Fontenay, etc... plus Lake Liez for pedal boats. The village is very friendly, restaurants in Arc en Barois are just right - relaxed with good local food. Above all Sarah and Tim are incredibly helpful and solicitous.

Stuart, Saffron Walden

Probably the best gîte we have ever stayed in. Wonderfully clean and well presented on arrival, lovely location (as part of an estate, all of which was available to us), superbly helpful owners, and located in a lovely village. Not mainstream France, but all the better for that: bucolic, green and relaxing. Would stay there again in a flash.

Mark, Shrewsbury

We have just had a lovely family holiday at these two properties. The houses are very attractive, have comfortable beds and the kitchens are well equipped. The secure shared pool is in a large garden with plenty of space for a game of boules, pirates on the climbing frame or relaxing. The village is in a pretty rural valley with lovely views. Most of the large towns are about one hour's drive from the property. The grandchildren had a great time and the grandparents managed to have the odd glass of wine in their own space. The owners Sarah and Tim are lovely and very helpful if needed

Hilary

We had a fabulous week staying here! The house was stunning and the pool and gardens were heavenly, the kids were so happy running about all week and Tim and Sarah were incredibly generous and accommodating! The local area was superb for cycling with and without the kids with easy tracks on empty roads and paths, and challenging off road rides too for the more adventurous! Dijon was an hours drive away, and well worth the trip, although Langres was lovely too! We loved the midday baguette & patisserie van that came to the door daily in time for lunch in the garden- who could ask for more?

Local points of interest from Sarah Groves

  • Historic towns of Troyes, Chaumont, Langres, Beaune and Dijon are well worth visiting, especially on their buzzing market days.
  • Four raised vegetable beds in the Pigeonnier field supply a mixture of tomatoes, salads and courgettes. Visitors are encouraged to use and “re-sow” after they have harvested and are also invited to help themselves to the raspberries mid summer!
  • Plenty of Brocante markets all summer long in local villages. Always authentic bargains to be had.
  • In France's latest National Park, 'Parc National de forêts en Champagne et Bourgogne', it is an area of natural beauty. The cycling for road bikes and mountain bikes is fabulous in the area.. Such quiet roads and tracks, and beautiful rolling countryside.
  • Guests can forage for ceps and truffles in the forests during Autumn and then spend relaxing evenings by the wood burner.
  • River running through Aubepierre, from the source of the Seine, offers a delightful alternative to the outdoor pool. The plunge pool ('empêlement') near the weir at the end of the village is a favourite place for locals to cool off during hot summers.

Sarah and her family live in the Great Barn next door to The Stables, and you're welcome to share the garden with them. She’ll leave you everything you need for your first breakfast and basics for cooking in the kitchen. At their French place, Le Domaine Richot, you’ll have friendly caretaker Catherine on hand if you need anything. She lives nearby and can deliver croissants for your first morning too.
