The Experience

Medieval Ortaffa sits in a pocket of sunshine between the Pyrénées and the lively port of Collioure, and this big old winemaker’s château – once the Episcopal palace of the bishops, adjoined to historic residential buildings – perches on its ancient fortified walls.

Large French windows open to the terrace, where breakfast comes with a stunning tableau of mountains and sea with village rooftops tumbling below – tuck into fresh fruit, excellent breads and pastries, local honey and jams. It’s a beautifully restored house, luxurious and with a relaxed holiday feel, whose elegant, pastel-shaded library and guest rooms display your hosts’ love of antiques and fine art.

Your room may have Picasso prints, bookshelves, an antique child’s bed, or quirky graffiti in the loo; one beauty, in pale greys and blues, reveals remnants of the former chapel. Roll down to the port for seafood, slide south along the coast to Spain.

Reviews

Angela, Burton on Trent

Alain and Michelle made us so welcome in their home. Alain was really helpful in suggesting places to visit and local restaurants, which all added to our enjoyment of our stay in the area. Michelle's breakfasts, served on their pretty terrace overlooking the town with the backdrop of the Pyrenees, were delicious. Would highly recommend this delightful chambre d'hote.

Sharon, Oxford

Even better second time around - thank you Alain and Michelle for your wonderful hospitality, warmth, generosity and for being such excellent company. Chateau D'Ortaffa is a very special place run by very special people and we will definitely be back.

Sharon, Oxford

Sometimes its people that make a holiday - and Alain and Michelle certainly made ours. Their home is just beautiful and sitting on their quiet terrace with a tortoise for company, quietly soaking in the view and the sunshine was one of the highlights of our trip. Generous, helpful and welcoming our hosts set a very high standard. Although Ortaffa is a quiet small town, it is an ideal place to explore the local area - we definitely hope to come back.

Robin, Miami Beach

We loved this jewel of a place. Michelle & Alain were the most gracious of hosts in this most wonderful of places. Although a bit difficult to find, it is well worth the effort. Chateau d'Ortaffa is their personal home and it shows in the details. Each room is filled with interesting paintings, sculpture, found art and furniture. Comfortable elegance at its best. Our room, "Baroque," was more than spacious with an enormous bathroom and a very comfortable bed. The area offers a wide range of places to explore from the seaside town of Collieure to Cathar monuments. Highly recommended.

Scott, Edinburgh

Thoroughly recommended - Alain and Michelle looked after us wonderfully well in their home, which is a delight in itself, full of paintings, sculptures and photographs. Alain speaks very good English and his advice about where to eat, what to see (even where to park) was spot on. We loved everything about Chateau d'Ortaffa. It's a fabulous area to visit - the Pyrenees, Mediterranean, Collioure, Ceret etc., and Spain's just a short drive away. Marvellous!

Location

The neighbourhood

You're in a good place for varied days out. It's half an hour to the Mediterranean, Collioure and the Banyuls vineyards, half an hour to the Spanish border and an easy distance to Dalí's museum and Cadaqués. Céret is also half an hour for the fabulous modern art museum. There is good walking in the countryside and the Canigou mountain. The nearest train station is at Perpignan, 30 minutes.

Local points of interest from Michelle & Alain Batard

  • The Catalan port town of Collioures is under 20 minutes away. There is a popular annual Saint Vincent festival around the 15th August of music and fireworks.
  • The climate where we are is lovely, we get over 300 days of sun a year!
  • There are many Cathar castles to visit nearby and the Roman art circuit.
  • The Spanish border and East coast are not far.
