The Experience
Medieval Ortaffa sits in a pocket of sunshine between the Pyrénées and the lively port of Collioure, and this big old winemaker’s château – once the Episcopal palace of the bishops, adjoined to historic residential buildings – perches on its ancient fortified walls.
Large French windows open to the terrace, where breakfast comes with a stunning tableau of mountains and sea with village rooftops tumbling below – tuck into fresh fruit, excellent breads and pastries, local honey and jams. It’s a beautifully restored house, luxurious and with a relaxed holiday feel, whose elegant, pastel-shaded library and guest rooms display your hosts’ love of antiques and fine art.
Your room may have Picasso prints, bookshelves, an antique child’s bed, or quirky graffiti in the loo; one beauty, in pale greys and blues, reveals remnants of the former chapel. Roll down to the port for seafood, slide south along the coast to Spain.

Location
The neighbourhood
You're in a good place for varied days out. It's half an hour to the Mediterranean, Collioure and the Banyuls vineyards, half an hour to the Spanish border and an easy distance to Dalí's museum and Cadaqués. Céret is also half an hour for the fabulous modern art museum. There is good walking in the countryside and the Canigou mountain. The nearest train station is at Perpignan, 30 minutes.
Local points of interest from Michelle & Alain Batard
- The Catalan port town of Collioures is under 20 minutes away. There is a popular annual Saint Vincent festival around the 15th August of music and fireworks.
- The climate where we are is lovely, we get over 300 days of sun a year!
- There are many Cathar castles to visit nearby and the Roman art circuit.
- The Spanish border and East coast are not far.

Introducing
Michelle & Alain Batard
Alain (once in advertising) and Michelle (in antiques) are friendly, articulate and know their patch well. They've been running the B&B for many years.
We enjoyed the lovely views from our room and the breakfast terrace and the owners are particularly helpful and charming.
