The Experience
Perfect for families: an old cottage which is one of two properties set in two and a half acres of gated grounds of a former Cognac Domaine, surrounding the owners’ Charentais manor house. The good-sized heated pool, set in the orchard overlooking the vineyards, is just for guests, while each cottage has its own terrace and courtyard garden with barbecue. Down a narrow driveway lined with shrubs and flowers is Manor Cottage: find a buttery-yellow sitting room with cosy armchairs and sofas, bedrooms that are a mix of old English checks and French toile de Jouy, two pristine shower rooms and a family bathroom downstairs. There’s a generous welcome pack: a bottle of Bordeaux, jams from the orchard, cakes, fresh fruit, coffee. Cooks will be content in the kitchen with its modern layout and white crockery, and plenty of space in the living room means you can eat at a table here or outside in good weather. Your kind hosts are there if you need them and can deliver breakfast if you are feeling particularly lazy! They’ll also give advice on vineyards to visit, and take you out in a classic car if you wish. Deeply relaxing.

Not knowing what to expect, this was truly delightful. The cottage was spacious, clean and private. Lyn and Graham are amazing hosts. The welcome evening meal was delicious and breakfasts fabulous. Lyn gave us ideas of routes that we might like to use as we didn’t know the area at all. Each route was great. Brilliant suggestions for meals out too and we managed a classic car meet at the local cognac museum as well which was interesting. The food throughout the holiday was sublime. This was a thoroughly relaxing, interesting and friendly holiday. Definitely recommend anyone to book.

Fabulous! The hospitality was superb, never before had the opportunity to have superb dinner with our hosts. The Morgan car was such fun; loved exploring the countryside. A private tour of a Cognac cave was a highlight. Couldn’t recommend highly enough, especially if you want to treat yourself to driving a Morgan!

We had a wonderful stay in Manor Cottage, part of Lyn and Graham’s delightful Rose des Vents property (formerly a cognac estate). The cottage is well-furnished and comfortable, as well as very private. An excellent location for exploring the old towns of the Charentes: Angoulême, Cognac, Saintes. The market in St-Jean-d’Angély is wonderful for fresh food, and there is a large new Intermarché supermarket in Matha, just five minutes’ drive away.
