The Experience

The elegantly furnished apartment is essentially one room with a dividing wall between the bedroom and the kitchen/living/dining area. You’ll find a few books in English about the area and some cookery books. The kitchen, small and neat, still contains all you might need for proper meals, including induction hob and oven plus a decent coffee machine. You’re left all the essentials like tea, coffee, oil and herbs and sometimes a treat.

From your well-dressed bed you can look out of the window onto the quiet street below and into the square; a very classy little bathroom at the back of the property has double sinks, a marble-effect floor and a large walk-in shower. From here you have a view of the wooded hills beyond and a glimpse of the Tiber which runs through the town.

Step out to the Bar Centrale for your morning coffee and delicious hot cornetto – Umbertide is refreshingly untouristy and unstuffy, you’ll feel rightly Italian.

Location

The neighbourhood

From the back of the apartment you can start a lovely walk along the Tiber, or follow any number of paths up into the nearby hills. Stock up at the twice-weekly local market, head to Cantina Blasi (a five-minute drive) for a wine tour, tasting and sumptuous meal, enjoy authentic local cuisine at Ristoro in Campagna (a ten-minute drive) or walk seven minutes to a wine bar/restaurant, Enoteca Grace.

Local points of interest from Sabrina Caporali Wallace

  • Cooking classes at my house, 10 minutes drive from the flat. It is a rectory house attached to a small 11th century church, surrounded by greenery at the foot of Monte Acuto, directly where the walking paths begin.
  • Wine tasting and great food at Vineria del Carmine.
  • Local market in the Piazza every Wednesday and Saturday morning.
  • From the apartment you can take very beautiful and suggestive walks along the Tiber River.
  • Civitella Ranieri Castle is 5 minutes drive. It is an international residency program for writers, composers, and visual artists.
  • in 5 minutes walk you can taste really good food and wine at restaurant Grace.
