The Experience
Tucked up a small lane, this traditional Portuguese home, half an hour north of Faro, is delightful. Away from the busy south coast you can get a proper taste of Portuguese country living: pop into the nearby market town of São Brás for a pastel de nata, buy fresh produce at the daily food market, visit the museum to learn all about the cork industry.
Return to cook a delicious meal and eat on the plant-filled shady terrace, just off the neat kitchen. Up a level, the rooftop terrace has mesmerising hillside views, watch spectacular sunsets here and sleep on a comfy double bed as the stars begin to bristle. There’s a fenced pool too, down more steps, and the entire garden is peaceful and filled with the sounds of birdlife.
Inside, en suite bedrooms branch off the kitchen and living room, there’s one double and one twin/double. Hang out in the cosy living room, it has a burner for chilly evenings, smart TV and WiFi.

Beautiful house, wonderful surroundings. Amazing gardens. Fabulous pool. Clean and with everything we needed. Fresh towels provided half way through our stay. We had a wonderful time staying here. Carina was very helpful giving us the number of Carlos, a local taxi driver, who was great and took us wherever we needed to go. Thank you so much for letting us stay at your wonderful cottage. Hopefully we'll be back one day.

We had a great time at The Cottage - beautiful roof terrace and pool. Very generous welcome pack and extra bits provided for our daughter for the pool. Loads to do locally. Brian and his team were always helpful, kind and quick to respond. Other reviews mentioning the need for a smaller car are correct - parking is tight at The Cottage but nothing to worry about. If necessary, you can park next to the adjoining Farmhouse.

Location
The neighbourhood
It's a short walk to a good steak restaurant, otherwise hop in the car to São Brás for cafés, bars and restaurants, and an excellent market (open daily except Sunday) selling fresh produce and cork products. The town is famed for its cork production, take a tour from the museum. Colourful Loulé (15 mins) has a Saturday market for seafood, cheeses, charcuterie, honey, local gin, wine and much more.
Local points of interest from Kate Ferguson
- Have a sundowner on our roof terrace or even sleep under the stars. The views are breathtaking.
- Visit Loule with its daily covered market - perfect for fresh fish, seafood and local produce. Loule comes alive on Saturdays when the farmers bring their produce to sell.
- Your nearest beach is Fusetta - take a boat the islands to enjoy a Robinson Crusoe experience. There are numerous sandy beaches on your doorstep.
- Porches Pottery is an absolute must - see the workers hand painting their pottery. Have a look at the "seconds" for bargains!
- There is a lovely restaurant bar and restaurant just a 10 minute walk from The Cottage
- You can even drive to the Spanish border and cross over in the little ferry from Vila Real de Santo Antonio to Ayamonte. Enjoy an authentic paella and then back to Portugal for a Pasteis de Nata!
