Forge Basse - The Barn & The Cottage
Savignac de Nontron, 24300 Nontron, Dordogne
Aquitaine, France
The Forge Master's House, 1480: how real does that ring on your 21st-century anvil? One of the most atmospheric places possible, the forge once had some 55 iron workers producing cauldrons for the West Indies, cooled by the river that still rushes past the door. Each gîte occupies half a fine stone barn with an extra room in the middle for one or the other. The well-named Barn is all height, beams and open plan. Huge granite blocks from the forge rise again in the door surrounds. The Cottage is cosy with its wood burner in the old fireplace. Both have a talented mix of old furniture and modern style, good quality and simplicity: simple carpeted bedrooms with good lighting and beds, bright bathrooms, open, well-fitted kitchens and lots of light. Each has its own wisteria-clad patio for privacy and barbecues but you all share the super garden, its heated pool, rowing boat and fishing. Nontron's knife factory and art galleries must be seen, lovely Brantôme is a bit further.
