Colombage, wooden galleries and exposed beams abound, in this unfussily restored ferme landaise at the end of a winding road. Around the house is a mowed field; beyond are woods of oak, pine and poplar; a two-minute walk away is a charming, tiny village: just a Mairie, church and school. (The bakery is a five-minute drive.) Nothing amazing about the garden – a few acacia trees for shade – but what it holds is heaven for families: a saltwater pool with a safety roof that slides on and off, a trampoline, a plastic jungle gym, a tree hut, space... and ping-pong on the big veranda. Inside: heaps of books, bright throws on sofas, a piano and logs on the house. Three open-plan spaces run the length of the ground floor, cosily heated underfoot: a sitting room, a hall with a cathedral ceiling and a mezzanine above, a yellow kitchen and a dining area, and a corridor to three simple, spotless bedrooms. Upstairs, under head-ducking eaves, is a bedroom for two children, and, on the landing, room for another two: if you don't mind a gang the house happily takes 13. Ideas for meals, markets and cultural sorties abound.
