Wide mown verges, spreading horse chestnuts and beeches – breathe in the peace of the Sarthe. This pretty 16th-century outbuilding survived the Revolution (the original château was destroyed) and is now a luxurious hideaway. The character has been exquisitely kept: rough beams, parquet floors and a wow-factor staircase of ancient oak blocks that owners Isabelle and Christophe felt must be preserved. A high-ceilinged, deep-windowed living space has chic contemporary fittings and an impressively equipped kitchen; granite steps lead to a lounging barbecue terrace. On the ground floor, a big double bedroom with Louis XV-style chairs, its bath and dressing area tucked behind a screening wall. Upstairs, a double and a twin ideal for children; both light, but with their windows up high: this was once a cider store. These simple rooms are vibrant with Isabelle's hand-dyed linens: aubergine, hazelnut, lime green. Beyond the rose-clambered gate are wildflower meadows, a millpond and 20 acres. Pick vegetables and flowers from the organic potager; book a shiatsu massage or a children's cookery course.
