The Experience

David and Rosie are relaxed hosts and everything slows down the moment you open the gate. If you enjoy your own space, spread out in the annexe with a wet room or find upstairs bedrooms white and fresh with lavender and Rosie’s paintings. Breakfast in the neat cottage dining room or al fresco: honey from the bees plus anything you ask for, David might go foraging or catch a trout for supper; bring your own wine and wander the garden with a glass –  masses of colour, rare trees, ample veg patch where five types of tomato grow! Cider tasting is just up the road, Barrington Court and market town Ilminster are close.

We were made very welcome by Rosie and David into their beautiful home and garden, where we stayed in the annex which was very well equipped and comfortable, welcomed each morning by chickens and ducks which roamed the garden. An unforgettable stay which was further enhanced by a superb meal cooked by David on the final evening. Couldn’t want for anything more.

Wendy, Staffordshire

We enjoyed an excellent stay at Brewer's Cottage. The accommodation in the annex was spacious & comfortable. David & Rosie were great hosts, friendly & welcoming - lots of interesting conversations! Breakfasts & dinner were superb, the latter being far better than any restaurant meal we've had in a long time. The garden was beautiful with the added attraction of some fine ducks & chickens, plus one errant homing pigeon!

Karen, London

From the moment we arrived at this rural accommodation, ( staying in The Annexe of Brewers Cottage ) we knew it to be a very good choice. The accommodation was more than adequate and within a few steps of our own terrace garden and also the breakfast room ; lovely meals with locally sourced produce. Would highly recommend.

Julia, Canvey Island, Essex

This was our first visit to Brewers Cottage and not our last! David & Rosie were welcoming and charming hosts. We were treated more like old friends rather than guests and that set the tone for a wonderful few days during which we were treated to an exquisite dinner on our first evening followed by delicious cooked breakfasts thereafter. David has a passion for good food and this was reflected in the meals we enjoyed during our stay. The garden was an oasis of beauty, tended by Rosie and was absolutely stunning. We were encouraged to roam as freely as we wished. So a huge thank you from us!

Roz, Surrey

Our second visit to Brewers Cottage and just as wonderful as the first time. Lovely hosts, amazing food (David's suppers are stunning) and beautiful, relaxing setting. We'll be back!

Clare, Bristol

We have just spent an idyllic short break at Brewers Cottage. David and Rosie are the most welcoming and attentive hosts you could ever wish for! The annexe was so comfortable and well furnished with a wonderful wet-room as well. David is a superb cook and both the breakfasts and the evening meals he served us were incredibly good! The gardens were so peaceful and tranquil and we so enjoyed watching the chickens and the ducks! We felt so comfortable and secure in these Covid19 times - the whole stay was just perfect! Thank you David and Rosie - we will return!

Hilary, Maidenhead

Lesley and Tony, Southport

Our recent idyllic stay with David and Rosie was everything we could have wished ... and more. They are truly kind hosts and adept at dealing with requirements to ensure a safe stay, including a private garden space for The Annexe. We loved its stylish, immaculate decor, comfortable bed, efficient shower and divine crisp linens. Dinner and breakfast were both totally delicious. The whole experience was beyond our expectations. We wish Rosie and David well and very much hope to return.

Bob, London

I can only concur with other recent reviewers: this is a delightful place to stay on all counts. The cottage itself is charming, with a large and delightful garden, the location is extremely tranquil, the owners are friendly, welcoming and very informative about the area and David's cooking is simply superb. Dinner easily surpassed the quality of most restaurants and breakfast was similarly excellent, with extensive use of their garden produce, including eggs, vegetables and honey. Outstanding.

Andrew, Edinburgh

This was our second visit to Brewers Cottage and we thoroughly enjoyed the 3 nights in the annexe. David cooked for us 2 evenings and his meals were among the the best we’ve ever had. It’s worth staying with Rosie and David for the dinners alone! They made us feel very comfortable and secure in their precautions against COVID- couldn’t be faulted. Thank you again.

Frances, Macclesfield

We were a group of 6 (3 family-related couples) staying for the weekend at Brewers Cottage. David and Rosie were delightful, helpful hosts. They provided us with a warm welcome and an extremely comfortable stay. We booked to have an evening meal there on our first night. Our chosen dishes were all superb; five stars for presentation, quality and taste. We ate out the following evening at a ‘Good Food Guide’ recommended restaurant in the area - all 6 of us agreed that the previous evening’s meal at Brewers Cottage was far superior. Thank-you David and Rosie, a very special house and garden.

Susan, Guildford

We had a wonderful stay at Brewers Cottage; the hosts are lovely and the setting is beautiful. We stayed in the annexe which is self-contained with its own patio and a spacious wet room. David and Rosie are so welcoming and cooked us a delicious hearty breakfast. We’ll definitely be back!

Louise, London

Thank you, David and Rosie , for a most special and comfortable 3 night stay in Brewers Cottage. The weather was not very summer like, , but we can’t hold our very pleasant hosts responsible for that!. David and Rosie have a very special knack of being there when you want them for advice but know exactly when you want to be alone. David is also a SPECTACULAR COOK. You would go a long way to find a better meal in most restaurants. All in all, a very highly recommendable B&B

Ann and Armin, Wuppertal Germany

We really enjoyed our 2 nights at Brewer's Cottage. The bedroom was comfortable, the garden lovely and there is so much to see in this area. What we were most impressed by was David's food. We had dinner in the house both evenings and it was superb. Three exquisite courses of sheer delight. David takes a pride in sourcing wonderful ingredients and performs magic with them.

Frances, Macclesfield

What a gem. We felt like we were staying in Provence. Stunning location. Fantastic house and garden. David and Rosie were charming, and so very helpful, keen to ensure we had a great couple of days with them. The cottage is gorgeous, spotlessly clean and well appointed with quality furniture and furnishings. Very comfy beds and bed linen. The breakfasts were outstanding. Fresh eggs from the ducks or chickens you see in the garden. Perfectly cooked. The most amazing fruit compote I’ve ever tasted. We had dinner plans but next time I will dine with them as the food was excellent. Thank you

Tom, West Malling

I spent 2 nights at Brewers Cottage while visiting the area to attend a local event. David and Rosie are exceptional hosts and my stay with them was both enjoyable and very relaxing. I had a comfortable double room in the main house and had two very peaceful nights in the quiet of the countryside. David is an excellent cook and the full English breakfast (with all local ingredients) was definitely the best I have ever had. I had also booked dinner for the first night and that was also very good. Highly recommended for anyone looking for "get away from it all" break.

Chris, Southampton

We had two nights with David and Rosemary and David cooked a beautiful meal on my birthday. The house is lovely in a fabulous location close to some interesting places such as Barrington Court. It is very tasteful and comfortable and we slept very well in a most comfy bed with lovely bed linen and fluffy towels. We were looked after impeccably but not intrusively at all. Breakfast and dinner were heavenly. The flavours were just amazing. David is an excellent cook and sources ingredients locally. It was like having a top chef cook for you at home. Highly recommended- we will be back.

Gill, Farnham

Words cannot express how wonderful this place is and how inviting and warm both David and Rosie are. Set in a quiet part of the countryside, it's the perfect place for one to recharge and rejuvenate. To sum up, it's good for the soul. The room we had was excellent and the breakfast top notch. David is an excellent chef! They've got some lovely pets that roam freely in their beautiful garden. Hope the 3 little new ones are there when we return ;) ! Can't wait to return. Multiple thumbs up.

Christopher, Singapore

We stayed in the annex, a purpose built guest room furnished with a large double bed, TV and WIFI – all very comfortable and spacious, along with ensuite bathroom and shower. A three course evening meal was on offer, chosen from a menu we received a few days prior to our stay; some of the fruit and veg coming straight out of their beautiful cottage garden. This meal exceeded all expectations, and was equal to the best restaurant meals we’ve had. The breakfast was also excellent, and we would recommend Brewer’s Cottage as a B&B without hesitation – David and Rosie are wonderful hosts.

Max, Cambridge

Really nice place in a quiet village, David and Rosie are very enthusiastic and it's such a pretty area to visit. We didn't try the evening meals, but we had heard they are top standard and next time we visit, we will be sure to eat there. Don't miss the remarkable Church at Isle Abbotts.

Local points of interest from David & Rosie Darrah

  • We are in the peaceful heart of rural Somerset, on the edge of a quiet hamlet, off the beaten track, yet close to many historic market towns and villages with miles of wonderful countryside to explore.
  • The National Trust opens houses and gardens nearby; Barrington Court, Montacute House, Lytes Cary Manor and Tintinhull House to name but a few. Other lovely gardens to visit are at Hestercombe, Forde Abbey and East Lambrook Manor.
  • For walkers, cyclists, nature lovers, painters and photographers this part of Somerset is a slice of heaven. The surrounding countryside is largely unspoilt, with big skies and wonderful wildlife.. RSPB and Somerset Wildlife have several reserves nearby.
  • Local to us are the Somerset Cider Brandy Company at Burrow Hill, the Artisan workshops at Barrington Court and Brown & Forrest Smokery just up the road at Hambridge. There are also some outstanding places to eat nearby.
  • We are mid-way between the North and the Jurassic South Coast, both being less than an hour away. Exmoor, the Blackdown Hills, the Mendips and the Quantocks are all close by. Perfect walking country with stunning views and plenty of great pubs on the way.
  • If you don't want to go out to eat, we can provide you with an evening meal here. We use the very best local ingredients; Lyme Bay fish, meat and game from local farms and shoots, artisan bread and cheeses, our own vegetables and eggs.
