The Experience
Wind round a final bend to confront a wild valley, so wide and grassy it could be a backdrop to ‘Watership Down’. Here lie 35 acres dotted with horses and mown by sheep: yours to explore. The owners’ house, at the end of the long, high-hedgerow’d lane, was the Keeper’s Cottage for Montacute House, six miles down the bridle path and Elizabethan (yes, you can walk there). Your cottage (please no dogs), a beautifully converted single-storey old dairy, is attached. Open the stable door to a find a little nest glowing in the sunlight, all whites, creams and soft grey-blues. The clever woodwork is Andy’s – his workshop is on site – while Sarah runs a stud farm and breeds German ponies. A hamstone wall and an arched doorway separate the dreamy living and sleeping areas: fat white sofa, coir carpeted floor, woody kitchenette. Eat in Tintinhull, stock up in Yeovil, visit the farm shop a mile down the lane (it has a bistro too). Return to exposed beams above the big goosedown-dressed bed, and a little courtyard that catches the sun.

This is an absolute gem and if it's peace and tranquility and great base in which to explore Somerset that you are looking for then this is the place. The cottage is immaculate, the 6ft bed incredibly comfortable, an amazing walk in shower and the lounge and kitchen are well equipped. Sarah and Andy are great hosts and provided one of the best welcome baskets that we have ever experienced, and their restuarant suggestions were excellent! We had a delightful holiday.

Sock Farm Cottage is a very spacious and comfortable place in the tranquil Somerset countryside on the doorsteps. Our hosts, Sarah and Andy, are kind and friendly, generous and highly attentive to their guests providing them with freshly farm produced food. We enjoyed those days in a delightful setting with the historical monuments of the National Trust close by.

We have stayed in many self catering and B and B establishments as well has swish hotels and we both agree that Sock Cottage is in our top 3. The welcome from Sarah and Andy, a visit to Andy's mega man shed, the beautiful decor, the shower big enough for a five a side football team and the mega comfortable bed. Did we mention the breakfast supplies left for us and the well equipped kitchen? Everything you need is there, no clock in the bedroom - remember you are on holiday - no need. Very highly recommended.

Dear Sarah and Andy, thank you for your warm welcome and the most wonderful stay. Everything we needed was provided, as well as those extra touches which made us feel like VIPs. It was the perfect place to nestle down and take a rest from our busy life and to recharge our batteries. Our short week consisted of big days - there was plenty to explore and visit within a short distance, either on foot or by car. Even a visit to the beach was only an hour's drive away. We cannot commend Sock Cottage highly enough.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Sarah Steggall
- Wake up to magnificent birdsong. Woodpeckers, squirrels and badgers in the wood, wrens and swallows nesting in the small barn opposite the cottage and buzzards displaying their flying skills over our hills. We even have wild deer in our hedgerows.
- There is no need to shop on your way here. You will find the little kitchen stocked with all the immediate essentials to welcome you plus local farm produce of your choice to create a delicious breakfast the following morning.
- Although Sock Farm nestles in its own valley at the end of a long 'No Through Road' we are within a few minutes of main routes from London to the West Country. Its unique position offers peace and tranquility with easy access to explore and enjoy the area
- Enjoy some of the excellent pubs and restaurants in the area. Our eldest son is a rather splendid Head Chef and has put together a 'well tested' list of suggestions for you to try.
- For keen walkers we have direct access from our land onto Monarch's Way. This runs for 615 miles and was the escape route taken by King Charles ll after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester! A stroll to Montacute House is only 40 minutes though.
- A growing number of our guests now have electric cars. We have a charging point in the stable yard close to the cottage for convenience.

We spent three days in Sock Cottage and Sarah and Andy were extremely kind and welcoming. It was a beautiful escape In a very tranquil place. Amazing sausages and bacon and lovely eggs for breakfast. The house was very quick to warm up on a damp, cooler June day!
