The Experience

Wind round a final bend to confront a wild valley, so wide and grassy it could be a backdrop to ‘Watership Down’. Here lie 35 acres dotted with horses and mown by sheep: yours to explore. The owners’ house, at the end of the long, high-hedgerow’d lane, was the Keeper’s Cottage for Montacute House, six miles down the bridle path and Elizabethan (yes, you can walk there). Your cottage (please no dogs), a beautifully converted single-storey old dairy, is attached. Open the stable door to a find a little nest glowing in the sunlight, all whites, creams and soft grey-blues. The clever woodwork is Andy’s – his workshop is on site – while Sarah runs a stud farm and breeds German ponies. A hamstone wall and an arched doorway separate the dreamy living and sleeping areas: fat white sofa, coir carpeted floor, woody kitchenette. Eat in Tintinhull, stock up in Yeovil, visit the farm shop a mile down the lane (it has a bistro too). Return to exposed beams above the big goosedown-dressed bed, and a little courtyard that catches the sun.

Reviews

A very romantic spot in the untrammelled hills of Somerset, filled with birdsong, fields and woodland for perfect walks. Garden lovers will be particularly happy here with a footpath walk to Tintinhull and a slightly longer walk to Montacute - both away from busy roads.

We stayed at Sock Cottage a few weeks ago and have to say we were impressed with how beautiful it was even in February. It feels as though it is in the heart of nowhere but is, in fact, within easy reach of lovely towns such as Sherborne. Surrounded by rolling fields it is a truly magical place to stay. The cottage is beautifully appointed inside, super comfortable bed and local produce in the kitchen waiting for your arrival. Our hosts Sarah and Andy Couldn't have been more friendly and were always ready to give advice on where to go for the wonderful walks that are available.

Anja + Michael, Berlin / Germany

Thank you for the warm welcome at the wonderful Sock Cottage! Everything is lovingly decorated (with real flowers!) without forgetting the practicalities. Everything was there for our stay and perfectly equipped: Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, heating. A full hearty breakfast awaited us with tasty produce from the surrounding farms. Surrounded by greenery in absolute tranquillity. A good starting point for long walks and excursions in the surrounding area Glastonbury, Wells, the Mendips ... or lovely houses and gardens nearby.

Valerie, Witham Essex

We really enjoyed our relaxing stay at Sock Cottage. Set in beautiful peaceful countryside, with lovely views from the windows. Well appointed and extremely comfortable. We really appreciated the welcome pack of local produce. Sarah and Andy were the perfect hosts, so welcoming and friendly. We hope to visit again, as there is so much to see and do in the area.

Jenny, Swindon

We are never disappointed when we stay in Sock cottage. From the warm welcome, to the comfort of the cottage. Lots of places to visit in the area, and great scenery and walks.

Local points of interest from Sarah Steggall

  • Wake up to magnificent birdsong. Woodpeckers, squirrels and badgers in the wood, wrens and swallows nesting in the small barn opposite the cottage and buzzards displaying their flying skills over our hills. We even have wild deer in our hedgerows.
  • There is no need to shop on your way here. You will find the little kitchen stocked with all the immediate essentials to welcome you plus local farm produce of your choice to create a delicious breakfast the following morning.
  • Although Sock Farm nestles in its own valley at the end of a long 'No Through Road' we are within a few minutes of main routes from London to the West Country. Its unique position offers peace and tranquility with easy access to explore and enjoy the area
  • Enjoy some of the excellent pubs and restaurants in the area. Our eldest son is a rather splendid Head Chef and has put together a 'well tested' list of suggestions for you to try.
  • For keen walkers we have direct access from our land onto Monarch's Way. This runs for 615 miles and was the escape route taken by King Charles ll after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester! A stroll to Montacute House is only 40 minutes though.
