The Experience

Wind round a final bend to confront a wild valley: 35 acres dotted with horses and mown by sheep – yours to explore. The owners’ house, at the end of the long, high-hedgerowed lane, was the keeper’s cottage for Elizabethan Montacute House, six miles down the bridle path and a lovely walk. Your cottage, a beautifully converted single-storey old dairy, is attached. Open the door to a find a little nest glowing in the sunlight, all whites, creams and soft grey-blues.

You’re left very generous breakfast ingredients with tasty alternatives for vegetarians: sausages and bacon, eggs, bread, butter, milk, tomatoes and mushrooms – all from local farm suppliers. It’s a lovely place, informal and fuss-free. Walks from the door are plentiful and on balmy days you can sit outside and enjoy the views across the fields.

Eat in one of the nearby recommended places, stock up in Yeovil, visit the farm shop a mile down the lane (it has a bistro too). Return to the big goosedown-dressed bed and a peaceful night.

Reviews

A very romantic spot in the untrammelled hills of Somerset, filled with birdsong, fields and woodland for perfect walks. Garden lovers will be particularly happy here with a footpath walk to Tintinhull and a slightly longer walk to Montacute - both away from busy roads.

Lovely accommodation--everything you need to enjoy your holiday is provided by very caring, thoughtful owners. If you are looking for a place that allows you to relax and unwind -you have found it in Sock Cottage. The owners have three lovely, friendly dogs -each with their own character. A short drive will take you to three National Trust places-all worth a visit. But, if you just want to stay around the farm and take a walk you'll be rewarded with some stunning far reaching views.

Ingrid, Leatherhead Surrey

Sock cottage is the perfect get away. The interior is completely lovely and very comfortable, especially the super big bed. The shower was really roomy. It had a well stocked kitchen. It was very clean and well maintained, and set in beautiful surroundings. We could not have asked for more. The hosts Sarah and Andy are very charming and made us feel very welcome.

Kate, Tavistock

What a totally fabulous , beautiful and tranquil place. The cottage is just stunning. It has everything you need, an enormous and comfy bed, epic walk in shower, well-equipped kitchen, a lovely sitting area and just totally and lovely place to be. Beautifully decorated. Huge thanks to Sarah and Andy for hosting us - we were made to feel so welcome!

Flora, London

Exceptional ! All the things you wished every place you stayed had. Special mention to the bed, the enormous bath towels and high grade goodies in the fridge ...will definitely come back.

Location

The neighbourhood

From the cottage, Tintinhull is a 20-minute stroll, or Montacute 40 mins – both along bridle paths – the hearty can join The Monarch's Way and go further. Martock is the closest village (there's a super garden centre on the way) and has a bakery, butcher, small supermarket, farm shop and a gallery. Ham Hill is walkable for the fit or a 10-min drive. Good pubs include The Rose & Crown at Trent (15 mins), The Devonshire Arms and The Barrington Boar.

Local points of interest from Sarah Steggall

  • Wake up to magnificent birdsong. Woodpeckers, squirrels and badgers in the wood, wrens and swallows nesting in the small barn opposite the cottage and buzzards displaying their flying skills over our hills. We even have wild deer in our hedgerows.
  • There is no need to shop on your way here. You will find the little kitchen stocked with all the immediate essentials to welcome you plus local farm produce of your choice to create a delicious breakfast the following morning.
  • Although Sock Farm nestles in its own valley at the end of a long 'No Through Road', we are within a few minutes of main routes from London to the West Country. Its unique position offers peace and tranquillity with easy access to explore the area.
  • Enjoy some of the excellent pubs and restaurants in the area. Our eldest son is a rather splendid Head Chef and has put together a 'well tested' list of suggestions for you to try.
  • For keen walkers we have direct access from our land onto Monarch's Way. This runs for 615 miles and was the escape route taken by King Charles ll after being defeated in the Battle of Worcester! A stroll to Montacute House is only 40 minutes though.
