The Experience

Down winding country lanes in the depths of the Welsh Marches, an Elizabethan farmhouse sitting in nine acres and surrounded by attractive barns. The Hop Pickers’ House was used by the hop workers, and it sits at right angles to an open barn. Step in to find an airy feel, open-plan upstairs and down, with white walls, old beams, wooden floors and a charming mix of pretty china, comfy chairs, throws and jugs of flowers. The kitchen area is cosy and rustic with a painted dresser, pine table for four and wood-burner (plenty of logs); you’ll find milk in the fridge, cake, jam and, of course, apple juice. Hop up painted stairs to a big four-poster with diaphanous drapes – be lulled to sleep by the hoot of an owl, the bleat of a lamb. Stroll through woodlands, wild flowers, fern gulley and orchards; rest by a babbling brook. In a distant corner with a view of the setting sun is a makeshift barbecue. The owners are in the farm next door through a rose-strewn pergola but you’ll feel very private. Lovers will purr with happiness here, walkers too, and cooks can stock up with food from famous Ludlow only 15 minutes away. A mouth-watering snug of a nest.

Reviews

Matthew, Tewkesbury

Beautiful spot, exceptionally clean property, really well equipped and tastefully furnished. Really useful information and instructions beforehand. Perfect for a peaceful, romantic and relaxing escape!

Jane, Nottingham

We had a wonderful week at Hop Pickers’ Cottage. The cottage itself was so comfortable and well-equipped and the gardens / grounds are beautifully peaceful and dog-friendly. We are already planning our next stay - no higher recommendation!

Jane, Bath

A really lovely place to stay, deeply rural, private and with access to a pretty garden and plenty of land to take the dog. The house is stunning, a very cosy downstairs with fully equipped kitchen and upstairs the most beautiful room with an ancient roof. A place to contemplate the skill of builders several hundred years ago. Altogether difficult to fault and the host charming. Would love to visit again in the summer.

Rachael, Shrewsbury

I booked as part of my partner’s Birthday surprise, and it turned out to be a great choice. Stephen and Steven were really accommodating and allowed me to visit the property in advance so I could hide presents in the garden. The house itself was spotless, with everything we could have needed for our 3 night stay, warm, cosy, a comfortable bed and a basket of logs ready to go. The area is beautiful with country walks from the doorstep. The little home made treats were a delight, and we were horrified when we realised we had checked out and left a biscuit behind! Just book it!

Iain, BRIDPORT

We and two dogs loved it. We stayed a week and will go back. The marmalade, jam and apple juice are VG too.

Local points of interest from Steven Hickling

  • We're a stone's throw from Ludlow, described by Sir John Betjeman as “probably the loveliest town in England”. It boasts a majestic castle, stunning Georgian architecture, fantastic markets (almost every day) and exceptional places to eat.
  • Enjoy the peace and seclusion of nearly nine acres of gardens, meadows, woodland and of course, the brook. Perfect for a stroll with the dog, listening to the birds, lying in the sun...or a beautiful place to just be.
  • Our local town, Tenbury Wells is known as the “town in the orchard”, an ideal place for sampling local cider or juice. Tenbury also has a lovely selection of independent shops and a striking art-deco theatre / cinema, The Regal.
  • Hop Pickers’ House is a beautiful refurbishment of the old travelling hop pickers’ barn accommodation, an integral part of county life in this area for centuries. A finalist in the UK Staycation Awards.
  • There are spectacular gardens in the area - Berrington Hall, Stockton Bury and the walled garden at Croft Castle. Also, beautiful Stockton Bury. Or follow the Black & White Villages Trail, through some of England's prettiest villages.
  • We have wonderful local walks - and are a short drive from the spectacular walking areas of Mortimer Forest, Shropshire Hills (Church Stretton and Long Mynd), Clee Hill and Wyre Forest. Great for dog walks!
