The Experience

You approach from the back, down the bumpy track, over the cattle grid… but the glory of this handsome villa is the front and the view. Overlooking the Dwyryd estuary and rolling Welsh hills you’re a ten-minute wander into the Italianate fantasy village of Portmeirion where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and a deserted beach.

The estate is covered in subtropical woodlands and the house’s terraced gardens, part-overrun, are heaven for children to hide-and-seek in. Adults have long lawns and a barbecue for al fresco dining. Inside is comfortable: Edwardian windows and polished oak floors, wood-burners in fireplaces, book-filled shelves. Toys, games and DVDs invite children to settle in, there’s a panelled library with an open fire and calming bedrooms. The master room opens onto a balcony with views over the estuary.

A generous hamper filled with lovely local stuff waits in the kitchen. The best of North Wales is at your feet: Black Rock Sands beach is a 15-minute drive, Porthmadog a 20-minute stroll, Snowdonia not much further.

Reviews

The terraced garden would be a joy to sit in with its views across the estuary to the mountains. The thought of being lucky enough to spot an osprey could keep me there for hours. Then, to be able to walk back through the french windows into the cosy and welcoming sitting room or Library, would be a perfect way to unwind. Home from home, but in an Edwardian style with a warm, contemporary twist.

Our first visit to this wonderful house. What a find!! The whole family really enjoyed their holiday from the youngest of 11 years to the eldest of 71 years. Everything we could have wanted was here. A lovely touch with the hamper and local beer. A huge thank you to Iona who took in our Tesco delivery and unpacked it for us ready for when we arrived. Hopefully we shall return in the very near future.

Anne, South Croydon

Delightful house in a great location. A little secluded, which we loved, with wonderful views down to Portmerion which is an easy walk. The house is beautifully equipped and furnished with everything you need for a great holiday provided. Gwen, the housekeeper, is very helpful and is keen to ensure that a good time is had by visitors to Hafod Cae Maen. Thoughtful touches include fresh flowers and a lovely basket of goodies to enjoy. We had a fantastic week with four adults and three children aged 3, 5 and 7. Lots of great places to visit and all within easy reach. I am sure we will return.

Phil and Ann, Birmingham

Stayed at the beautiful Hafod once again, this time we stayed for 17 nights as we have so loved our 2 previous stays so much. Set in the most perfect tranquil setting you could imagine, lots of beautiful scenic walks to enjoy. It’s also well worth a walk to Porthmadog via one of the walks that Paul has mapped out in the visitors book, you can get the highland steam train to Caernarfon which is a must to do. Castle Deaudraeth is only a short 10 min walk where you can enjoy food and drinks with beautiful views. We have already booked our 2 week stay for 2020 and already can’t wait:-)

Julie, Welshpool

Wonderful house in a stunning location. Couldn't have found anywhere better for our family weekend away. Thank you for the very thoughtful and welcome gift basket which set the tone for a very well planned guest experience; logs ready by the fire, tea & coffee by the kettle etc. All so easy and relaxing for us. Loved our walks down to the cob and to the Castell, bird watching all the way. Even the weather behaved - sun almost the whole time. And enjoyed very much rummaging through the library. Diaries of Duff Cooper v entertaining. Many thanks

Location

The neighbourhood

Set on its own peninsula reaching into the estuary, this fantastical collection of colourful buildings with an Italian influence was masterminded by Welsh architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis. Today the buildings are all heritage listed and the site is a conservation area. There are stretches of quiet sandy beaches to discover, Porthmadog has a popular indoor swimming centre and Snowdonia is close.

Local points of interest from Paul de Thierry

  • A ten minute walk through woods to Portmeirion village. A truly unique place where there is plenty to look at and lovely woodland walks. Also two good restaurants and a fantastic ice-cream shop!
  • Take a picnic and walk through the sub-tropical woodlands of Portmeirion to a deserted beach.
  • Beddgelert, Harlech and Capel Curig are within easy reach and wonderful places to visit
  • Boston Lodge halt for the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland narrow-gauge steam railways is ten minutes by footpath. Steam enthusiasts can also book to go on Snowdon Mountain Railway.
  • Ideal base for walking in the Snowdonia National Park and visiting stunning local beaches including Harlech and Morfa Nevyn.
  • Adrenaline junkies can experience an extreme zip wire ride or bounce on a gigantic underground trampoline at Llechwedd Slate Caverns while their non-adrenaline junkie friends visit the historic slate mines!

Introducing

Paul de Thierry

As a child, Paul de Thierry visited his grandfather who lived beside the local steam railway. He fell in love with the area and the villa and is now lucky enough to own it. He is delighted to be able to share this special place with others.
