Wave goodbye to the tourists trundling west, drop down to heaven. A web of narrow lanes and a tumbling green valley have done the trick: Penpoll is unstirred and all the more special for it. As for the garden, steeply sloping in parts, it's as lovely as can be, all apple orchards, primroses, snowdrops and weaving paths, with a barbecue and a pirate-boat sandpit. Hop over the lane to the creek, bring the children to dam, paddle and splash. Charm comes inside from deep window sills, stooping door frames, creaking floorboards, the odd antique. Don't expect perfection, it is as fresh, inviting and as loved as can be; family photos, books and games are dotted about. There's room for muddy boots and space to spill out, the pretty kitchen holds all you need, the dining table is convivial, the cream Aga brings rosy cheeks. Drift off on a stripy sofa in the sitting room, curl up by the wood-burner – there are views from all windows to the creek. Bedrooms are cosy and have colourful throws and cushions; two doubles, plus two rooms for budding Swallows and Amazons, will suit a big family. We fell in love with it all.
