You are 650 metres above sea level and feel on top of the world – the Arno valley reaches out before you and the air is pure. Paolo is a talented gardener and each bush, tree and herb has been chosen with care, posing magnificently next to the solid, blue-shuttered house. The interiors of the house and apartments are delightfully rustic and contemporary. Each is different: kitchen surfaces are of granite, or local pietra serena, bathroom walls are softly ragged in varying shades. All have French windows to a patio with wooden outdoor furniture. Oil, vinegar, sugar, coffee, salt and washing-up liquid are provided; ask in advance and they'll provide more (for which you pay). The reception is in a beautifully restored, de-consecrated chapel, with an old bread-making chest and a 'shop' selling Odina olive oil, honey, lavender and beans. Take a dip in the pool, go for long, lazy walks in the olive groves and chestnut woods, prepare a barbecue. Garden courses and visits – highly recommended – are held here in May.
