Perched at the end of half a mile of golden sand – waves lapping nearby, sea birds overhead, the heart-stopping view to Rathlin Island and Scotland all yours – Bath Lodge is a quaint, lovable family house, a warren of level changes, rambling staircase, corners, crannies and a comfortable mix of furniture. There's nothing posh or scary: bring the children, their friends and all the gear without fear for the ancient floorboards or well-worn rugs. The grown-ups will grab the deep-seated view-filled sitting room; the big downstairs 'dormitory' doubles as a fine playroom, the lawns are great for games, the walled garden for sheltered peace. Originally five 18th-century miners' cottages whose tiny attics were thrown up to create lofty ceilings, it has old bones and the essential modernities. In the large kitchen/breakfast room the Aga fights the huge refrigerator for centre stage, the scullery hides any mess. Bedrooms have the same old-style comfort of mixed antiques, good beds, space. Rabbits crop the clifftop of the wild garden in peace yet the town is just behind you. Brilliant for a family holiday.
