Off a Georgian cobbled courtyard in bookish Hay-on-Wye, two side-by-side cottages full of comfort and charm, designed with romance in mind

Read guest comments

Off a quiet road in Hay, through wooden gates, across a cobbled courtyard with a parterre garden, lies another world. Flagstones tell of a Georgian past, while the attention to detail by the owners has given the coach house a whole new life: romantics will be happy here. Find a fresh décor of plain walls, heated wooden floors and exposed beams, a comfy sofa, a blazing wood-burner. This easy living space leads into a kitchen that wants for nothing. Slide in alongside the solid oak table or perch on the cushioned window seat overlooking the plant-strewn yard. Downstairs is the little bedroom, with lacy blinds, crisp linen, wooden shutters front and back, fairy lights and flowers add charm. Hang your hat on the peg once used by the coachman and pop across the hall to the bathroom: twin sinks, lovely soaps, sumptuous lotions and potions, and a sunken bath to soak in. Many are drawn to this historic town for its innumerable bookshops and renowned literary festival; others tick off Offa's Dyke and the Welsh mountains. It's the perfect hideaway. And if you have bookie friends, the 12th-century stables next door are another treat.

"We had a very warm welcome from Michael with a full tour of the cottage, facilities and a potted history of Hay. The cottage is cosy, quirky and comfortable. Everything we needed was provided. We loved the sunken bath, log burner and heated floors - very welcome after a hard day in the hills! Although Hay is small there are lots of little cafes and bars. We had lovely meals in Tomatitos and the Three Tuns. Truly lives up to the reputation as the most romantic cottage in Wales,"

"Highly recommend the lovely Georgian coach house. It was a real home from home. A really lovely relaxing place to stay and will definitely return.. The bathroom is beautiful and there is a well stocked kitchen although the location is only a short distance from several restaurants. The perfect place for a nice relaxing break."

"Had a great stay at this accommodation. The cottage was really well equipped; spotlessly clean and the bathroom amazing. We didn't need to take the car out all week as the location is right in the middle of the town with great restaurants just a short walk away. This is a must for booklovers!"
