Dorset is the kind of place that makes you want to pack up your city life, buy a dog, and develop a sudden interest in artisanal breadmaking. A county of spectacular contrasts, it offers dramatic Jurassic coastal clifftops and fossil-hunting beaches one moment, then pretty market towns with thatched roofs straight out of a period drama the next. It’s a paradise for culture lovers, foodies who like their ingredients local and their beer independent, and anyone who enjoys a good seaside stroll. Here are six of the best towns and villages to visit in Dorset, plus our recommendations on places to stay for a perfect getaway.

Bridport

A lively market town with an artistic edge, Bridport brims with creative energy. Originally a hub for the rope-making and net industry, the town’s wide Georgian streets were designed for spinning long lengths of rope, and now host independent bookshops, vintage boutiques, and art galleries.

The twice-weekly market fills the centre with the buzz of traders selling everything from locally churned butter and organic cider to handmade crafts and antiques. Just a short walk away is West Bay, with its towering golden cliffs made famous by televisions Broadchurch. Grab a seafood platter or fresh crab sandwich at Rachel’s, a tiny harbourside hut with a big reputation.

Stay at The Bridge House, a welcoming country house in the heart of town, known for its award-winning breakfasts and comfortable rooms.

Lyme Regis

With its pastel-coloured cottages and a historic harbour that has inspired literary icons like Jane Austen and John Fowles to draw their pens, it’s a town steeped in stories. Wander through the town’s winding streets to discover independent bookshops, cosy cafes and art galleries. Or stroll along The Cobb, and watch the local fisherman land their daily catch.

The Lyme Regis Museum, built on the site of Mary Anning’s home, tells the story of this pioneering palaeontologist whose fossil discoveries changed the course of scientific history. Fossil-hunters can still search for 180-million year old ammonites along Monmouth Beach. For food, book a table at The Millside, where you’ll be introduced to some of the best seafood in Dorset.

Stay at Little Madeira Cottage, a shell-pink, thatched bolthole with sweeping sea views and a secret shortcut to the main street.

Shaftesbury

Famous for the picturesque Gold Hill of Hovis advert fame, Shaftesbury is a dream of a market town, with cobbled streets, historic charm and views over the Blackmore Vale. There’s something timeless about it. Perhaps because it sits on one of the oldest roads in England, once trodden by medieval pilgrims and traders.

For a perfect day here, start with coffee and either a full English breakfast or a pastry at The Salt Cellar, which offers a front-row seat to Gold Hill’s outrageously photogenic incline. Then, explore Shaftesbury Abbey, a ruined Benedictine monastery founded by King Alfred, before wandering into the town’s independent delis to pick up some local cheeses and chutneys.

Stay at The Grosvenor Arms on Shaftesbury’s high street, serving wood-fired pizzas and local steaks, with a buzzing bar that’s a hub of Shaftesbury life.

Abbotsbury

If you ever find yourself longing for the England of storybooks, Abbotsbury is where you’ll find it. Thatched cottages and an ancient tithe barn make this one of Dorset’s most picturesque villages. But it’s also home to some surprising attractions.

Abbotsbury Swannery is considered one of the best places to visit in Dorset. It’s the only place in the world where you can walk through a colony of hundreds of mute swans nesting on a lakeside, a completely unique spectacle in the UK. A short climb up St Catherine’s Chapel rewards you with sweeping views over Chesil Beach. Stop by The Old School House for a cream tea before you head home.

Stay at Quintessential B&B, a honey-coloured stone cottage with a warm, sociable feel, homemade apple cake and delicious vegetarian and vegan breakfast options.

Sherborne

Sherborne is the kind of town where history is everywhere you look. It boasts two castles, a 12th-century abbey and a thriving arts scene. Alongside its rich history, Sherborne has a lively, modern feel, with independent bookshops, quirky boutiques, and some truly excellent places to eat.

Start your day with a browse at The Jerram Gallery or Chapter House Books, then grab lunch at The Green, where the local produce is not to be missed. Thanks to its well-connected train station, Sherborne makes for an easy car-free getaway, with direct links to London and Exeter.

Stay at Eastbury Cottage, a cosy end-of-terrace cottage with its own private garden and hot tub. Enjoy a hamper of goodies on arrival or simply wander up the road to the hotel’s restaurant and spa.

Wimborne Minster

A small town with a big personality, Wimborne Minster is a joy to explore on foot. It’s home to a beautiful twin-towered Minster Church, charming riverside walks, and a thriving independent food scene. Spend a leisurely afternoon here hopping between farmers’ market stalls, browsing antique shops, and stopping for a pint of something local.

For casual dining, The Taphouse is a cosy spot serving craft ales and seasonal dishes, while Number 9 is the go-to for a fine dining experience. The town is also a cultural hub, with events at the Tivoli Theatre and the lively Wimborne Folk Festival drawing crowds throughout the year.

Stay at The Gate House, a beautifully renovated Georgian house a short stroll from the town centre. With seven elegant bedrooms, a red dining room perfect for feasts, a hot tub, and a spacious garden, it’s ideal for families or groups of friends.
