The Experience

The approach is down a long gravelled drive with swathes of lawn on either side; mature trees and an orchard lead to a deep lake in which you can fish. You have a choice of two lovely places to stay: a charming rescued pigeonnier, bright and airy with a beamed ceiling and a lovely terrace for late sunshine and dreamy views. Or a separate house on the other side of the main one with a private terrace, barbecue and table seating with views over parkland and small lake. Both feel private and unoverlooked, have large well-equipped kitchens, plenty of comfy seating and shady spots for deckchair snoozing. There’s a super shared pool with lake views and a games room for all. Easy to stay put but there’s much to see and do in this unspoilt part of the country, one hour south of the Dordogne. Five minutes away, Auvillar, one of ‘les plus beaux villages de France,’ still has its circular, covered market.

Reviews

Tony, Salisbury

Allison and Nick have created a beautiful, comfortable and convenient haven with La Farat, set in a quiet corner of SW France. Their warm greeting, generous welcome basket of foods, wine, juice and milk were a delight upon arrival and their attention to our comfort and enjoyment continued throughout our week long stay in Maison du Solely. The surrounding countryside and nearby villages of Bardigues and Auvillar were stunning and our hosts are full of useful tips for day trips. If you're seeking peace and quiet, you could do no better than La Farat. We will be back!

Ian and Barbie, Hampshire

We stayed in the B&B for 4 nights as R&R from a hectic family holiday (16 of us including 8 grandchildren!) further North. Our stay with Allison and Nick was just the tonic we needed. They are the most wonderful hosts and we felt welcome the moment we arrived. Le Farat is simply perfect; the tranquility of the countryside, punctuated only by the seasonal activities of the farming communty and yet you are within a couple of minutes of the lovely town of Auvillar. Lots of restaurant choice and our experience. There are many beautiful villages in the region & great restaurants. We will be back.

David, Bristol

We had the most amazing time in Maison de Soleil in July. The Gite was perfect, had everything we could ask for and also stayed really cool during a number of 39-40C days. The lovely pool was very well used! Allison and Nick could not have been more kind, considerate and helpful. We had not been to that part of France before but it was stunning with some amazing hilltop villages and lakes and rivers to swim in. We will be going back to Le Farat and can’t recommend it highly enough. Thanks Allison and Nick.

Christine and David, London

We stayed in the Maison de Soleil, fabulous beamed ceilings and stone walls. Furnished to a high standard with statement bedroom furniture, comfortable beds and luxury bed linen. Every detail is carefully considered for the guest experience. The welcome pack filled with everything you would need on arrival with hams, cheeses, cake and wine! Allison and Nick are amazing hosts, a font of knowledge and always on hand. With the stunning autumnal scenery and the tinkle of Wilma's (the dog) reindeer bells this was a magical break in a beautiful location. Highly recommended.

Alice & Tom, London

We spent a peaceful week staying in the Pigeonnier house with our two young children. It was beautifully spacious and cool inside even when it was 39 C outside. Alison and Nick made us very welcome and had thought about all the details to make our stay comfortable, including a huge welcome pack with homemade cake and home grown fruit and veg. They'd made adaptations to keep things safe during covid, and the place was spotlessly clean. The gardens and grounds have lots of space for exploring, long views and a trampoline. and the pool is big and clean with more lovely views. Highly recommended

Local points of interest from Allison & Nick Feeley

  • Auvillar is a certified "Plus Beaux villages de France" . Built from Quercy Stone & Toulouse brick (unique to the area) The medieval bastide centre is focused around a rare circular grain market still used regularly for daily village life and festivals
  • Auvillar is listed as an important place to visit on the famous pilgrims walking route "St Jaques de Compostelle" GR65 which passes by the door. We are quickly becoming a favourite stop for the more discerning walker in our luxury B&B suite.
  • Just a few minutes stroll through the beautiful countryside you will find a fantastic reasonably priced restaurant. Michelin recognised and focusing on local fresh produce, the restaurant is one not to miss on a stay with us. Advanced booking essential.
  • A gastronomes delight! This region is famous for Agen prunes, wine, Armagnac, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, melons, fois gras and much more. Fresh seasonal fruit and veg are available daily at our neighbours' farm, picked to order if required.
  • Each Pentecost weekend Auvillar springs into life with its 2 day wine festival the "St Noe" It attracts visitors from all over the region and hosts traditional dancing, communal meals, music lead processions and plenty of wine! One for your Spring Diary.
  • Local markets are a way of life here and there's sure to be one each day of the week within a few minutes drive. Vide Greniers are popular too, with many antiques to be found amongst the junk Its a great opportunity to haggle - all part of the fun!
