The Experience

The approach is down a long gravelled drive with swathes of lawn on either side; mature trees and an orchard lead to a deep lake in which you can fish. You have a choice of two lovely places to stay: a charming rescued pigeonnier, bright and airy with a beamed ceiling and a lovely terrace for late sunshine and dreamy views. Or a separate house on the other side of the main one with a private terrace, barbecue and table seating with views over parkland and small lake. Both feel private and unoverlooked, have large well-equipped kitchens, plenty of comfy seating and shady spots for deckchair snoozing. There’s a super shared pool with lake views and a games room for all. Easy to stay put but there’s much to see and do in this unspoilt part of the country, one hour south of the Dordogne. Five minutes away, Auvillar, one of ‘les plus beaux villages de France,’ still has its circular, covered market.

Reviews

Cleo, Berkhamsted

We had a very relaxing week at Le Farat. Our gite was well furnished, clean and comfortable, the salt-water pool was lovely and the kids made good use of the well-equipped games room. Allison & Nick were excellent hosts, helpful and friendly and easy to find if we needed them. Auvillar and the surrounding area was pretty and quiet, but we also drove a bit further afield for a day kayaking on the Garonne. Would recommend.

A great place to stay! We've returned each year for the past seven and have found new reasons to enjoy staying there always. Our gite is decorated to a high specification and there is nothing that we are left wanting. Who could not adore relaxing around the swimming pool after a day of adventure in surrounding area. Auvillar is an attractive village nearby but the jewel in the crown is probably The Auberge de Bardigues, a restaurant situated in the little village on the hill top opposite Le Farat. This restaurant always produces a meal of gastronomical delight. Definitely a property to visit!

We have stayed in the lovely Maison dus Soleil for 2 weeks. Modern, stylish, comfortable beds, everything you could think of is there. The view from the terrace is wonderful and relaxing. We had a last minute, it was all arranged in a very short time. When we arrived late in the evening; fresh flowers on the table, welcome box, beds ready to sleep in. The owners Nick and Allison are welcoming and helpful in a very pleasant way. We all, including our dog, loved this special place. One of your best!

We had a glorious week at pretty Le Farat. It is full of character, space, classic furniture, a very comfortable bed and all the kitchen facilities you need for a self-catering holiday. Allison and Nick Feeley were wonderful hosts and were extremely helpful without being intrusive. They keep both the interiors and exteriors beautifully maintained and the salt water pool was wonderful. To us, this is one of France's prettiest regions with incredible views, great markets, historic towns, canal walks, fantastic fresh produce and friendly people. Great holiday and we'll be back next year.

Local points of interest from Allison & Nick Feeley

  • Auvillar is a certified "Plus Beaux villages de France" . Built from Quercy Stone & Toulouse brick (unique to the area) The medieval bastide centre is focused around a rare circular grain market still used regularly for daily village life and festivals
  • Auvillar is listed as an important place to visit on the famous pilgrims walking route "St Jaques de Compostelle" GR65 which passes by the door. We are quickly becoming a favourite stop for the more discerning walker in our luxury B&B suite.
  • Just a few minutes stroll through the beautiful countryside you will find a fantastic reasonably priced restaurant. Michelin recognised and focusing on local fresh produce, the restaurant is one not to miss on a stay with us. Advanced booking essential.
  • A gastronomes delight! This region is famous for Agen prunes, wine, Armagnac, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, melons, fois gras and much more. Fresh seasonal fruit and veg are available daily at our neighbours' farm, picked to order if required.
  • Each Pentecost weekend Auvillar springs into life with its 2 day wine festival the "St Noe" It attracts visitors from all over the region and hosts traditional dancing, communal meals, music lead processions and plenty of wine! One for your Spring Diary.
  • Local markets are a way of life here and there's sure to be one each day of the week within a few minutes drive. Vide Greniers are popular too, with many antiques to be found amongst the junk Its a great opportunity to haggle - all part of the fun!
