The Experience

The approach is down a long gravelled drive with swathes of lawn on either side; mature trees and an orchard lead to a deep lake in which you can fish. You have a choice of two lovely places to stay: a charming rescued pigeonnier, bright and airy with a beamed ceiling and a lovely terrace for late sunshine and dreamy views. Or a separate house on the other side of the main one with a private terrace, barbecue and table seating with views over parkland and small lake. Both feel private and unoverlooked, have large well-equipped kitchens, plenty of comfy seating and shady spots for deckchair snoozing. There’s a super shared pool with lake views and a games room for all. Take both places and you’ll have everything to yourselves. Easy to stay put but there’s much to see and do in this unspoilt part of the country, one hour south of the Dordogne. Five minutes away, Auvillar, one of ‘les plus beaux villages de France,’ still has its circular, covered market.

Reviews

Alice & Tom, London

We spent a peaceful week staying in the Pigeonnier house with our two young children. It was beautifully spacious and cool inside even when it was 39 C outside. Alison and Nick made us very welcome and had thought about all the details to make our stay comfortable, including a huge welcome pack with homemade cake and home grown fruit and veg. They'd made adaptations to keep things safe during covid, and the place was spotlessly clean. The gardens and grounds have lots of space for exploring, long views and a trampoline. and the pool is big and clean with more lovely views. Highly recommended

Kay and Damian, Derbyshire

We stayed at Le Farat in the beautiful Maison de Soleil for 7 days in August 2019. Without a doubt this was the best holiday experience we have ever had in France. Alison and Nick couldn't be more welcoming and helpful. Both our kids (10 and 14 yrs) enjoyed it just as much as we did and absolutely loved the pool and games room. This is a great base from which to explore a stunning and unspoilt part of France. The gite was immaculately clean and very well provisioned - and to arrive with a selection of cheese, bread, wine and home grown produce plus a cake was very special - thanks A and N!

Joan and Michael, Christchurch, New Zealand

We stayed in La Maison du soleil, an elegant luxurious farm building conversion. We loved the huge, cool spacious bedrooms furnished with fabulous antiques and the most comfortable beds with exquisite linen plus the enormous Welcome Pack, a full-sized fridge, a decent sized freezer all in a superb kitchen. Everything was spotless, the saltwater pool was wonderful. The charm and elegance of the gite is outstanding, not to forget the delightful hosts, Alison and Nick.We arrived as strangers and were made to feel like visiting friends. Over many years probably the best gite we have used in France

Jenni, Derby

We visited Le Farat in August with our two children aged 9 and 4. It is in a beautiful location and the games room and swimming pool went down a storm with our kids. The gite was immaculate and really well equipped. A real home from home. Le Farat is beautifully situated near Auvillar which is a really pretty town and has a super cafe with delicious crepes! Allison and Nick were perfect hosts, helpful, kind and well informed on the area and I have to say that Allison’s lemon drizzle cake is to die for! A lovely, relaxing holiday was had by all. I highly recommend it...

John, Farnham

We've never been disappointed with Sawday's 'finds' over many years now and Le Farat, set in a staggeringly beautiful part of SW France, is no exception. We spent a few blissful early Autumn days in this airy B and B suite and can't recommend it highly enough. Every detail has been thought of to make your stay as comfortable and relaxing as possible-from a sumptuous bed and linens to home made jams at breakfast. Allison and Nick are welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable hosts who strike the right balance between being there if you need them and letting you enjoy your time in this lovely place.

Local points of interest from Allison & Nick Feeley

  • Auvillar is a certified "Plus Beaux villages de France" . Built from Quercy Stone & Toulouse brick (unique to the area) The medieval bastide centre is focused around a rare circular grain market still used regularly for daily village life and festivals.
  • Auvillar is listed as an important place to visit on the famous pilgrims walking route "St Jaques de Compostelle" GR65 which passes by the door. We are quickly becoming a favourite stop for the more discerning walker in our luxury B&B suite.
  • Canal des Deux Mers (Canal du Midi) classified as a UNESCO heritage site, just 8km away with a great cycling path alongside. Hire our bikes to sample a few Kms in the shade of the plaine trees to Moissac Abbey and Cloisters another UNESCO heritage site.
  • A gastronomes delight! This region is famous for Agen prunes, wine, Armagnac, peaches, nectarines, apricots, cherries, melons, fois gras and much more. Fresh seasonal fruit and veg are available daily at our neighbours' farm, picked to order if required.
  • Each Pentecost weekend Auvillar springs into life with its 2 day wine festival the "St Noe" It attracts visitors from all over the region and hosts traditional dancing, communal meals, music lead processions and plenty of wine! One for your Spring Diary.
  • Local markets are a way of life here and there's sure to be one each day of the week within a few minutes drive. Vide Greniers are popular too, with many antiques to be found amongst the junk Its a great opportunity to haggle - all part of the fun!
