Even within the masterly seclusion of high stone garden walls, at 300 paces you can smell the sea. Trust Claire to find this family maison de maître, tucked into a Breton hamlet with open views of sea-fields; the inside is equally impressive. Slip into the languid ease of long draping linen and voile curtains brushing against neutral walls and natural matting. Venerable beds – one with re-formed shutters for a headboard – are too good to resist. Local artisans made blush-red shelves for the zinc and wood kitchen, and brought similar genius to bathrooms. Modern sofas dance with antique bergère armchairs on quarry-tiled floors, to the amusement of stately armoires; seashells are piled high in glass vases and there's a lovely log fire for the winter. Send fidgeting children to the converted attic with table tennis and huge cushions. And as the nightly ocean breeze tickles candles in their mounts, old sea prints jostle with younger pictures – do they know Pointe du Raz is the most westerly point on the European mainland? All this, and delicious seafood in a pretty Audierne restaurant.
