No artificial pool here but a safe river with sand and a rock-ringed lagoon – swim where fish jump, coypu nest and kingfishers, terns and herons fish. There are three gîtes on site of which this is one, plus an annexe. Reached through lush water meadows, Le Pigeonnier is detached with views up and downstream. Only the frogs disturb the grassy peace by the path that leads down to the magical riverside with seating and barbecues for each gîte. Le Pigeonnier is an inviting little two-storey house for four. The pretty main bedroom, up steep open-tread stairs, is in the pigeon loft, complete with nesting holes; across the landing, the second, smaller, bedroom has a garden view; the bathroom is small, its bath tucked behind a beam. The open-plan ground floor has a step up from the kitchen/dining area to the cosy sitting room with its open fire. An excellent spot for châteaux lovers, cyclists, gourmets, twitchers and those wishing to mess about in boats – a punt, rowing boat and small sailing boat are all available. There is good fishing, too – particularly carp – and permits are available.
