Large spaces, ancient peace – such are the treats in store at this 15th-century stone house in the Avignonet-Lauragais. The defence tower (now a bedroom) is even older: note the gunner holes in the walls. The Renaissance additions include two great fireplaces, one in the dining room, complete with bread oven (logs on the house). It's a charming bolthole for families and the owners live nearby, happy to provide highchair, playpen and child bed; there's even a playroom at the top of the house. As for the décor, the combination of rustic stone and pale wood, tactile textiles, subtle lighting and the odd country antique is nothing short of delicious. Note that three of the bedrooms have tiny windows, including the child-cosy double under the eaves. Bathrooms are big, chic, friendly with real tubs; linen is embroidered cotton. The setting may be nothing extraordinary, on the rich treeless plains around Toulouse, but fruit trees have been planted on site: old-fashioned indigenous varieties. Idle your way down the Canal du Midi, gorge on the regions' cakes and cassoulets, return to a designer lounger by the pool.
