To the Lighthouse! Take the narrow winding road up to the most easterly point of the Irish Sea, to this looming, hugely atmospheric 1760s structure; enter and climb 109 metal stairs. Six creaking octagonal floors guard your home: bedroom one, a bathroom with tub, bedroom two, a comfy sitting room, and a well-equipped kitchen at the top. Forgetting vital supplies in the car merely keeps one fit, and everyone can find their favourite nook to sit in, looking out to sea and across to Howth Head. At night, the impressionable may meet the ghost of the "White Lady" on the stairs, though housekeepers Miriam and Brennan (who has worked for Irish Lighthouses all his life) have yet to encounter her. The décor is nautical Irish, with friendly colourful sofas and lots of wood; even as the wind howls, all is cosy and warm. Pierce Brosnan has slept in your bed and a young Hemingway camped on the blustery headland. Visit the working lighthouse below, walk along the cliffs into Wicklow Jail (haunted, of course), visit nearby Glendalough and Powerscourt. And Dublin is only an hour away. Unforgettable.
