This vast walled estate with an impressive 17th-century palazzo amid an ocean of citrus trees lives up to its name; your host Gabriele is a prince. Overlooking a vineyard, across a labyrinth of pot-holed tracks linking the various parts, are a villa and five converted farm buildings. The villa, with its own garden and gazebo-covered terrace with tiled banquettes, has a 12-seater dining room with lacquered cane ceiling, a living room with an open fire and formal bedrooms with large beds, all quirkily decorated with unusual period pieces. The terraced row of single-storey cottages, backing onto a quiet road, have hedged-off terraces, cotto floors, neat kitchens, mezzanine bedrooms for children (with ladders) and pretty, traditional bathrooms tiled top-to-toe in blues and whites. Tucked away in the formal garden, a rose-smothered, thyme-scented pergola provides shady recess and a discreet pool with sleek recliners has a good view of the smoking volcano. Taormina with all its cultural hot spots, and Etna with all of hers (lava flows are visible during eruptions) are a short drive, as are the beaches.
