On the site of an old gondola boathouse, on the southern side of the island of Guidecca, is a luxurious new waterfront development with spectacular views. Life's quieter this side of the lagoon, but there are still plenty of trattorias, shops and bars, the vista of islands is a dream and in eight minutes you can be stepping out of the vaporetto and onto the square of San Marco. If you have your own boat, you'll be glad of the private jetty. Inside: huge sheets of glass pulling in water and sky, polished marble sweeping from living room-kitchen to bathroom, Italian furniture, clean lines, white walls and pictures in gold frames. White and duck-egg blue is the kitchen, contemporary and cool. In the bedroom, the floor is of pale ash, the wardrobe of fitted glass and the bed is vast. Almost every modern luxury you can think of is here: air conditioning, underfloor heating, American style fridge freezer, electric sun blind, DVD and CD players, flat-screen TV. Outside, a courtyard from which a metal stair spirals its way up to a roof terrace tangled in jasmine with two perfect loungers… the sunsets are fabulous.
