Stay for a few days and enjoy a slice of Veronese life. Opening off the street, this tall, 16th-century, grey-shuttered palazzo stands in the old quarter, midway between the Piazza delle Erbe and the Duomo. It is owned and lived in by Signor Aletti and his lovely wife, who have created a guest apartment on the second floor. This is reached by a small lift and is serene, delightful and simply furnished, with gentle colours and family antiques. Sig. Aletti, quiet and softly spoken, with a huge smile, painted the murals himself. The beamed, white-walled double bedroom is cool and attractive, the little sitting/dining room has a sofa that unfolds to make two single beds (fine for children) and the old-fashioned bathroom is immaculate. There are some great food shops and restaurants in the area but if you're inspired to eat in, the little kitchen has all the mod cons. And you needn't fear the cold in winter: there's central heating too. Never mind the lack of an outside space – that hardly matters when the delights of Verona lie outside your door, and there are bikes to rent a few streets away.
