Herdade do Passareiro
Nossa Senhora da Boa Fe, 7000-013 Évora, Alentejo
Central Portugal, Portugal
Passareiro has been in an Anglo-Portuguese family for five generations: rustic Alentejo meets English eccentricity. The owners of this lovely old Alentejo farmhouse greet you on arrival in a cobbled courtyard dotted with loquat trees, and a housekeeping couple live next door. Inside feels like the family home it still is. Landed-gentry interiors exude an understated charm, furnishings are traditional but not over-styled, hats and green wellies line up by the door and there are books, giant fireplaces and a tiled mural of two much-loved former employees in the great country kitchen. Black pigs snuffle acorns in winter, source of the delicious 'porco preto' you find in your welcome hamper, along with olives and bread. The large rose-fringed terrace at the back is delicious for relaxing but the pièce de résistance is the pool: a glorious folly overlooking vineyards, fed by a natural spring. Sit back and watch the rays of the sun soften on immaculate white and Alentejo-yellow walls. White viognier is grown here; walks guide you through vineyards, ancient cork forests and olive groves. Heaven.
