You arrive at the back... to what seems like a tiny house limewashed in ochre. Inside, a surprising sense of space, more than enough for four; outside, a lush garden and a veranda with views to the coast on a clear day. All is airy and sunny, artistic and homely, with soothing colours and unglazed terracotta floors. The lofty, white-raftered living space is rustic and charming, with sofa and sofabed, wood-burner, pictures and books; the kitchen is lovely. The powder-blue bedroom opens to a corner of the terrace, the twin room is white and cool. The owners live next door; Sophie's green fingers have nurtured the wisteria and plumbago that romps all over the house, and the herbs and flowers that peep through every window. There's a sweet old horse in the olive orchard, the garden leads to a meadow – a picture in spring – and there's a small lake minutes away, good for swimming in early summer; sheep bells tinkle in the distance. Behind, on the edge of hills, are eucalyptus, olives and oaks, good walks (let Tuke guide you) and masses of birdlife. Pretty beaches are 12km away, and wild surfing beaches not much further.
