The view is phenomenal, sweeping down to the glittering coast. This attractive villa is built into the hillside high above the Algarve – at the top of the Foia yet below the tree line so the vegetation is lush. More than lush, thanks to numerous springs: olives, oaks, cork trees, pine, chestnut and eucalyptus burst and spill from every corner. You have three bedrooms in the main house, a double in the apartment above the garage, and a twin in the 'cottage', a hideaway for two. Main house rooms open onto a terrace – how could they not, with that view – while the pergola-shaded main terrace feeds off the sitting room, furnished with a glass table and fancy white chairs. There are loungers on the lawn, and a lovely large pool topped off by turquoise parasols on the next terrace up. All is hunky-dory inside and neat as a new pin: tiled floors, new rattan, striped cushions, smart kitchens – one big, one small. A sweet retreat for a Portuguese summer, but still an easy hop from surfers' paradise Arrifana or the beaches and golf courses of the Algarve. Bars, restaurants, cobbled streets? Monchique is on the windy road down.
